Page 37 December 2012 TRATTORIA DEL PIERO 2502 East Camelback Road 602-955-8400 Family brings piece of Queen Creek to the big city By Amanda Goossen A taste of Queen Creek has come to the big city The long awaited Union at the Biltmore Fashion Park is now open and with it comes local, independently owned companies and outstanding products. The Trattoria Del Piero — a restaurant from the Rea family, who owns and operates the Queen Creek Olive Mill in Queen Creek — is the perfect space in this rustic shopping cove to enjoy breakfast, lunch or the variety of small plates and cocktails that make up the menu after 3 p.m. The Queen Creek Olive Mill has supplied Arizona with its only native extra virgin olive oil for more than a decade. As a sustainable farm, the land in Queen Creek is home to over 16 different varieties of olives. And at the Mill, owner and operator Perry Rea not only presses his own oil but is the master blender. The Queen Creek Olive Mill is a beloved destination for many in Arizona. Visitors can enjoy an Olive Oil class, shop for extra virgin olive oil or the Mills bath and body products and dine in del Piero, the Mediterranean bistro with an organic and local in fl uence. For Arcadia residents who’ve been making the trip southeast for years, experiencing del Piero’s delicious food in the neighborhood is a gift. Local produce that is brought in fresh each day, as well as olives and oils from the family farm, help to make Trattoria Del Piero’s plates a thing of quality, fl avor and beauty. The Queen Creek Olive Mill is a family affair and with the new ventures at Union that hasn’t changed. Sydney Rea, who grew up watching her dad run the olive mill, is now running the Oils and Olives store at Union, and when she speaks of the family business you sense that her love for it is deep. “Mid-October to mid-December is the season for picking and pressing,” Rea said. “We are right in the middle of our key season and watching the neon green oil coming from the press, seeing it so fresh, is beautiful.”. To open at Union, the Rea family welcomed a new member into their family. Lisa Giungo, better known to many Arcadians as Lisa G., has joined the family as manager of the restaurant as well as to help design both the restaurant and the menu. Giungo, who was a beloved part of Arcadia Farms for over 12 years, is enjoying this new venture within such a unique shopping center. “The Union’s concept is something we are very excited to be a part of,” Giungo said. Storefronts at Union are small. There is only 825 square feet to work with, so Trattoria del Piero needed to get creative with space. “We bring in fresh ingredients every day because we don’t have much storage space,” Giungo said. The tiny kitchen opens up to a visible cooking line where restaurant patrons can view their eggs, sandwiches and salads being freshly prepared. The bar is stocked with everything needed to make Trattoria del Piero’s signature cocktails. And after 3 p.m., small plates are served instead of dinner. The company has made their cooking and preparation space small so that the restaurant feels comfortable and spacious. Great tables and an inviting bar make Piero’s a place you can sit and stay awhile. Highlights from the menu include the egg sandwich with fontina cheese on warm brioche, the Kalamata sandwich, which was featured on Food Network (includes del Piero Kalamata salami, genoa salami, capicola, herb roasted tomatoes on a ciabattini), the del Piero chopped salad and the baby spinach and Bulgarian feta salad. Fans of Giungo will be happy to know that her bowl of balls is back from her previous ventures. Beef, pork, veal, egg, and secret spices make up the meatballs she is famous for. Served in a bowl with a simple red sugo or on a roll as a sandwich, her bowl of balls is not to be missed. The small plates served after 3 p.m. include warm del Piero olives, fruit and assorted cheeses, a Tapenade trio, caponata and a Tuscan bean hummus. A great end to an afternoon of shopping, this aperitif menu is perfectly paired with a Peach bellini, a Fresh press (vodka, clamato, Worcestershire, Tobasco), del Piero (gin, sweet vermouth, Luxario liqueur and drunken hazelnut) or a limoncello martini. Local craft beers and wines by the glass or the bottle are also an option. The most surprising thing on the menu is the olive oil infused cupcakes. The chocolate cupcake is made with chocolate infused olive oil. Quite possibly the best cupcake I’ve ever eaten. At Union at the Biltmore, you will come for the shopping but stay for the food. And then you will return again and again for the deliciously crafted plates of fresh and local ingredients that you feel the Rea family has made just for you.
