Page 16 December 2012 Helping others can be tonic for holiday season Dr. James Doris By James Doris, MD During the holiday season, many of us pause to re fl ect on what we are grateful for in our lives. This can be a welcome break from the steady stream of shopping, cooking and social engagements that fi ll the weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day. Beyond counting our blessings, though, being a blessing for someone else can bene fi t our enjoyment of the season — and our health. Doing for others For many families, giving back to the community is as much a holiday tradition as pumpkin pie or eggnog. It’s a good thing, too, since studies show that helping others can give one an enhanced sense of heath and well-being. There are seemingly endless ways to contribute to the community, whether it’s helping feed the poor at a soup kitchen or a food bank or purchasing holiday gifts for families who can’t provide them for their children. Donating your fi nancial resources certainly is bene fi cial to others, but sharing your time and talents with those in need are other great ways to make a difference in the lives of those who may be less fortunate. A win-win It can be easy to get overwhelmed by the commercialism of the season and a packed social calendar. Volunteering can help take the focus away from yourself and give you a greater sense of balance and perspective during this hectic time of year. Page 17 December 2012 Local artists of all types at Festival of the Arts By Sara Norton The Phoenix Festival of the Arts returns this month with its largest show yet, featuring an open door to all artistic talent. The 37-year-old art festival will showcase the vast artistic talent in Arizona on Dec. 7-9 at Hance Park, 1202 N. 3rd St. This year the festival will feature works from more than two dozen different art organizations, along with live performances from dance companies and theater troupes and music from local bands. All of the proceeds from the festival will go toward fi nancing non-pro fi t art organizations in the Valley. “There are a lot of arts in Phoenix that no one knows about,” said Joseph Benesh, who is the director of the art festival. “It has turned out very well.” This year’s festival differs from past years because of the multitude of artists and performers that will be present, as well as the activities attendees can participate in, said Benesh. “There will be 80 different performances from musicians, dance and theater groups, as well as a children’s corner with activities for kids, and a beer and wine garden,” said Benesh. “There will also be a mural that anyone at the festival can paint on.” The festival features an indoor and outdoor stage for the theater and dance acts. The dance acts feature talent from various dance companies throughout the state as well as performances by hip hop dancers. Local bands will provide music for the audience. Food trucks like Tom’s Pig Rig and Short Leash Hotdogs will provide festival attendees with grub as they wander the exhibits. This is the largest art festival in the Valley that features Arizona artists and is expected to draw an audience of 5,000- 10,000 people. Organizers take an entire year to plan and coordinate the event. Artists interested in showcasing their work fi ll out an application for space at the festival, and bands audition. Benesh has been pleased with the high turnout of participation in this year’s festival. “This festival will showcase the arts all across the spectrum,” said Benesh. a a l Garden • Arcadia High • Peo op p p p s o o • St. Theresa • Basketball • Ki id d ds i se e eu ums • Softball • Shemer Art • Ch hr r ri r Vo o o ol lleyball • Neighborhood News • Sp po o or N te e e er rtainment • Ingleside • Football • N N N a en n n nt ts • Squaw Peak • Recreation • Dram m m ma a d Da a an nce • Church News • Hopi • Arc ca a a n l lt t th & Fitness • Arts & Entertainme e en n a s s • Hopi • Football • Desert Botani ic c c ca S a ad d d dia High • People • Phoenix Zoo • S S le • Ph a as s sketball • Kids • Tavan • Museums s • Tav h h er A l w w w Peak • Recreation • Drama • Baseb ba a a hu u ur rch News • H i Follow the Titans.
