Page 48 November 2012 Moneta said people will no longer have to go to Massachusetts for the history of Ireland. The executive director of the Irish Cultural Center, Patricia Prior, said there are about half a million people in Arizona of Irish descent. The library, along with the Irish Cultural Center, wants to bring Irish culture to the entire Phoenix community, Prior said. “Our purpose is to bring culture to the people, and hopefully they will join us and become a part of it,” Prior said. Moore said the community is now able to learn about the culture of Ireland by gaining access to Irish art, music, dance and literature. “People will have an abundant amount of information at their hands, because the McClelland Irish Library and the Irish Cultural Center are connected in the same complex,” Prior said. Moore said it is important for the community to realize the connection between Irish immigrants and the state of Arizona. “There is a cultural tie between Irish in the Southwest and Mexican history in the Southwest,” Moore said. According to the Irish Cultural Center, Irish is the second largest ethnic group in Arizona, and Moore said it would be good for people to know about the history of the Irish in the state. The McClelland Irish Library hopes to grow with more art exhibits and books for the community. “It’s a great place for everyone, many older people come here for the genealogy center, but there are also great facilities for children,” Moore said. The three-story building is equipped with Wi-Fi and access to library databases such as the library edition of Ancestry online. “We just want to help anyone who comes in,” Moneta said, “Eighty to 85 percent of people who know they have Irish heritage, don’t know where in Ireland they are from.” “The library is a community project that is here for people to learn, it’s kind of like a neighborhood center,” Moore said. The library is at 1106 N. Central Ave. More information is available at AZIrishLibrary.com.
