She said her recipe for carrot cake is a real crowd pleaser. It’s been handed down in her family from grandmother to mother to her. “The cake is moist, probably from the carrots and crushed pineapple. The pineapple might seem like an odd ingredient but you really can’t taste it,” Carrie said. “It’s so easy to make,” she said. “Everyone always loves it.” l Garden • Arcadia High • Peo op p p p s • St. Theresa • Basketball • Ki id d ds i e e eu ums • Softball • Shemer Art • Ch hr r ri r o o o ol lleyball • Neighborhood News • Sp po o or N e e e er rtainment • Ingleside • Football • N N N a n n n nt ts • Squaw Peak • Recreation • Dram m m ma a d a a an nce • Church News • Hopi • Arc ca a a n t t th & Fitness • Arts & Entertainme e en n a • Hopi • Football • Desert Botani ic c c ca S d d d dia High • People • Phoenix Zoo • S S s s sketball • Kids • Tavan • Museums s er A l Peak • Recreation • Drama • Baseb ba a a u u ur rch News • H i Plan your next date night. Page 39 November 2012 Valley spots dish up slices of some of the best pies By Amanda Goossen I love pie. Maybe it was the years I spent sitting in my grandparent’s kitchen, watching my grandfather working with dough, peeling apples and pinching crusts. Maybe it was because nothing has ever tasted as good as his pumpkin pie, his apple pie, his incredible cherry pie. He was most de fi nitely the greatest man I’ve ever known (sorry to my husband, but he knew my Papa and would de fi nitely agree) and he taught me everything I’ve ever needed to know about fl aky crust, fl avorful fi lling and the best whipped cream anyone could ever imagine. I’m a tough crowd. I rarely eat pumpkin pie because although it’s my favorite, few dedicated bakers can match the perfection my favorite Papa could create. Phoenix, however, is home to a few special spots that have brought “wow” to my lips. Pie Snob Last year I felt like Thanksgiving had fi nally, after many years, returned. I had abstained from pumpkin pie for many years. After trying my fair share of mediocre attempts I had fi nally given up. The Pie Snob changed that, forever. The Pie Snob bakes up truly memorable creations. The crust is outstanding, the fl avors delicious, the care and meticulous effort obvious. There’s a reason why the Snob is in high demand. Baking from her very own licensed bakery and kitchen, which just so happens to be in her own backyard, Traci Wilbur is able to bake pies that taste beautifully homemade, because they are. Pick up a slice at Bertha’s Café at 3134 E. Indian School Road and O.H.S.O Eatery and nano Brewery at 4900 E. Indian School Road or order from the Pie Snob today, piesnob.com. Bill Johnson’s Big Apple Open since 1956, Bill Johnson’s Big Apple looks like an extra large diner from the ‘60s. Suddenly in a time warp, I craved comfort food and hoped my expectations would be met. When the large caldrons of pie were placed in front of me, my dreams came true. I was handed a miniature pie served in its own ceramic dish. With the cherries, apples or peaches fi lling the dish, the crust was a piece of dough, cut in a circular shape and laid perfectly on top of the fruit, mimicking its larger counterpart. Find your comfort food at Bill Johnson’s Big Apple at 3757 E. Van Buren St. Mamma Toledo’s Pie on a truck? Holy cow! In October 2011 Tonya Saidi began the one and only Pie Truck in Phoenix. After years of hearing rave review from friends about her baked goods, yet working in industries that were less than inspiring, Tonya decided to go after her dreams. Starting her pie truck, which resembles a grown up version of an ice cream truck, gave this brand new business owner the ability to work at farmers markets, food truck events, of fi ce parties and weddings, before one day building her very own storefront. Served as 5-inch mini pies as well as 9-inch regular pies, Mamma Toledo has a large variety of fl avors. Apple crumb, cherry almond, blueberry and Green Chili Apple are just a few of the fruit fl avors while Strawberry Cream Cheese, French Silk Chocolate Peanut Butter Crème and Sweet Potato Pecan fi ll a small part of the Crème menu. My favorite is the Key Lime, especially in the 5-inch size so I can devour each and every bite myself. Check out Mamma Toledo’s website for more information on location and menu: mammatoledo.com Linda’s On Osborn Hidden in a discrete little home on Osborn is a small space that owner, baker and waitress, Linda McQuillan has been running for over 18 years. Linda’s On Osborn is the home away from home I’m sure has the most homemade like soup and patty melt in town (although this is an assumption and I will be going back to try).
