Page 32 November 2012 Irish library offers peek at culture By Tiffany Hopkins Phoenix has a 12th century Irish castle. Or at least a building with a reasonable resemblance. The McClelland Irish Library on Central Avenue has art exhibits and a genealogy center for those seeking to learn about Irish history. It celebrated its grand opening in September. “The library gives people a single place to learn the culture of Ireland, it’s a lot more than just a library,” head librarian Chas Moore said. Moore said the library is a major art exhibit open for everyone in the community, even if they are not Irish. The goal of the library, though, is to assist anyone who needs help tracing their roots, he said. “There are so many people who have come in looking for one grandparent or just searching for which part of Ireland their family comes from,” Moore said. The library’s certi fi ed genealogist Daniela Moneta said Phoenix is a great location for an Irish library. “On the East Coast, there are many Irish historical libraries, and I think this was needed in the West,” Moneta said. Page 33 November 2012 Chef returns to Phoenix Art Museum for pARTy By Amanda Goossen For more than 20 years Chef Vincent Guerithault has been serving up beautiful French-inspired fare to Arcadia residents. Developing a love of cooking during his youth in France, Chef Vincent worked as an apprentice to a young Wolfgang Puck before eventually coming to the United States to work as a sous chef at Chicago’s Le Francais. “Years after I came to Chicago, Wolfgang Puck came walking into Le Francais and I said ‘What are you doing here? I had no idea he had come to the U.S. and here he was in my restaurant,” Vincent said. Ten years after arriving in Chicago, Vincent opened a restaurant in Phoenix and began what has now become a staple in the community, Vincent on Camelback, 3930 E. Camelback Road. “Vincent’s opened 27 years ago and every year for the past 22 years, from late October to mid-May we open the market on Saturday mornings. The original idea was to do a market like we have in France, but it’s not as easy to do the whole chickens hanging from the ceiling thing,” he said. The market has evolved to have vendors, small tables where Panini’s, crepes and pizzas are served. A trailer which houses a wood- fi re oven, known as Vincent Van-Go’s, makes pizzas to order at the market, as well as travels to cater parties or local events. “Over the years, as the restaurant business has changed, we’ve made a few changes as well. In addition to our restaurant, bistro, market, and portable pizza oven, we have catering cars wrapped in our logo that deliver sandwiches and salads to of fi ce buildings for lunchtime catering,” Vincent said. “The catering cars are terri fi c, although our son is not a fan of being picked up in them at school with their bright colors and large logo.” The man behind one of the most beloved restaurants in the neighborhood is just as charming and lovable as his food. Down to earth and kind, Chef Vincent’s heart and soul are behind every aspect of his business. Patrons greet the chef with a bottle of wine and tell him Happy Birthday one day. Another man sits at a table, working on his computer and enjoys his breakfast, while chatting up the owner. The chef gives every guest his time, treating them more like family, than customers. “For many years, high school kids have been working in our marketplace each Saturday. We’ve tried to teach these kids not only how to work in a restaurant, but lessons for life. We’ve shown them the importance of looking someone in the eye, standing up straight, speaking clearly. “Years later when they come back, grown up, it’s amazing to see what they’ve done with their life.” The chef takes his place in the community seriously. His connection with the Phoenix Art Museum is proof of that effort. “I was involved with the museum in the ‘80s and am very excited to be back.” On Nov. 3, at the Phoenix Art Museum annual fundraiser, The pARTy, Vincent will serve his well-known and beloved food in a three-course-meal to museum guests. “The museum committee was looking to enhance the event this year and Vincent was a wonderful choice. Many of our guests know his food and are his regular customers. “We are very excited to have his food within the walls of the museum on Nov. 3,” said Alesha Nicole Corey, a spokeswoman for the museum.
