Funds battle constant at Shemer By Amanda Goossen Almost 30 years ago, Shemer Art Center, 5005 E. Camelback Road, was a gift to the city of Phoenix. In 1984, longtime Phoenix resident Martha Shemer donated the property. Understanding the history and importance of the place, Shemer knew this home, which was up for sale, needed to be conserved and the property well maintained. She told city of fi cials if they took care of the facilities, she would purchase it. With Shemer’s support and desire to bring art education to the neighborhood, the city worked with the Shemer Art Center and Museum Association. In 2010, however, Phoenix was no longer involved and with money running low within the association, Shemer Art Museum reorganized and redeveloped its plan.
