From pennies to lollipops, cleaner passes 50 years By Moriah Costa Kachina Dry Cleaners, a family run business, has been serving Arcadia residents for more than 50 years. Stacy Tsantilas, Kachina’s current owner, took the business over from his parents, Dane and Stella Tsantilas, who started the cleaners in 1959. Tsantilas’s grandparents had been in the dry cleaning business in Ohio, he said. Tsantilas started working at Kachina, 3926 E. Indian School Road, when he was 16. “I use to come hang out when I was a kid and would play out front,” he said. “My dad was going to sell it, I said no, I would take it,” he said. “It’s in the blood.” His father remains involved with the business, and his mother works out front greeting customers. “I didn’t know a thing about dry cleaning,” Stella Tsantilas said. She had planned to stay home and take care of her three children when the family moved to Phoenix from Cleveland, she said. One day her husband asked her to watch the front desk and showed her how to use the register. As she was needed more often, she said she decided to work there on a regular basis. She has been working at the cleaners for 54 years. She used to give her customers’ children pennies for the gum machine. “Those are gone, so I give them lollipops instead,” Stella Tsantilas said. Some customers who used to get pennies now bring in their children to get lollipops. “I love it, I enjoy my customers,” she said.
