Although bed bug infestations are an increasing problem, they are still relatively rare especially if you take the right precautions. The EPA suggests a few simple precautions, such as thoroughly inspecting second-hand furniture before bringing it home and simply reducing clutter in your home to minimize the amount of hiding places for the bugs. Bed bugs Continued from page 8 Pensions Continued from page 8 recession. Here are the solutions: Phoenix must adopt a pension plan similar to a self-directed 401(k). The culture of entitlement must come to an end. Government employees need to understand you can’t have a great pension, Cadillac health bene fi ts, pay raises every year and guaranteed job security. The new system (or the old one tweaked): New employees will have to pay half the cost of their pension program instead the current 5 percent of salary. Right now, taxpayers fund pensions by paying more than 20 percent of employees’ salaries. Current employees still will pay no more than 5 percent of their salary and taxpayers have to pay 20 percent plus. Only new employees will be affected. Finally, more and more it appears the taxpayer will need to take pension reform directly to the ballot. A taxpayer initiative is the road to real reform, not one driven by the government. Good news on Camelback Mountain Phoenix has secured funding and is fi nalizing a partnership with Paradise Valley to upgrade the parking and trails at Echo Canyon Park. After a series of public hearings, residents have selected a fi nal design that vastly improves parking at Phoenix’s most popular hiking destination. The project almost doubles parking spaces from 68 to 132, and a new roundabout on McDonald Drive will alleviate congestion at the park entrance. While Echo Canyon is closed to upgrade parking, the city will rebuild trailheads. Work is scheduled to begin in January and last through the summer. That time was picked so if construction runs long, the park would not lose two peak seasons. Cost is estimated at $2.8 million. To view the parking redesign: http://tinyurl.com/8zzklt3.
