Page 4 October 2012 October means it’s time to be outside to celebrate By Dale Messmer The calendar says I am writing this on the fi rst day of fall. The weather report says it will reach 103 this afternoon. The post of fi ce says you’ll get this on the fi rst of October. It will really be fall by then, I hope. October is a great month. The World Series. Cool nights. Warm days. And Halloween. Halloween is the best holiday. The gluttony of Thanksgiving with nary a cranberry in sight. The festive decorations of Christmas but no 10-week advertising blitz. And chocolate. Lots of chocolate. OK, maybe you’re more interested in giving the little costumed visitors something better for them. We have a couple pediatricians who have some ideas for you on page 34. How many trick-or-treaters do you average each year? We get a lot of kids from other areas who come as a pack in cars and walk through our neighborhood. Some of my neighbors hate that, but I think they’re just being cranky. Those kids always seem to have the best costumes, too. October is also the pink month, with a lot of good people doing good things for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. We have a package of stories beginning on page 22, with a personal note from reporter Amanda Goossen on page 24. This October is especially important for the families of Arcadia Neighborhood Learning Center. They have a new school they’ll be dedicating this month, complete with a carnival that includes the principal in a dunking booth. I’d have loved to have been part of such fun as a kid. Details are on page 39. The State Fair also starts in October. I did have a lot of Fair fun as a kid and continue to do so as an adult. This year, it runs Oct. 12 through Nov. 4. And on Oct. 9, the Arizona Fall League begins its 20th season. The AFL is the best kept secret in baseball. We’ve got a nice story about the league starting on page 48. See what I mean about October? Great weather and lots to do. Hope you get a chance to get out of the house and enjoy the month.
