Page 34 October 2012 Halloween safety, health advice from pediatricians Submitted by the Arizona Chapter of the Academy of Pediatrics, Childhood Obesity Committee Halloween health & safety from pediatrician Dr. Theresa LoCoco Have a healthy meal before heading out to trick or treat to avoid overindulging later. Give out non-candy items such as stickers or small toys. Walk from house to house rather than driving. Enjoy every minute of our beautiful fall Arizona weather. Have kids pick out their top fi ve-10 pieces of candy and then either donate the rest in exchange for a toy or ration the rest for the next months. Pick more healthful treats such as pretzels, fruit snacks or raisins. Avoid the over-sized pillow case bag. Smaller sacks allow you to collect less candy and feel satis fi ed. Instruct your child only one piece of candy can be collected from each house even if the homeowner says that it’s OK to take more. Consider hosting your own Halloween party for the kids and focus on healthy snacks. This way Halloween can be about the fun of getting dressed up and playing with friends rather than over indulging in candy. Healthy alternatives from pediatrician Dr. Rob Ziltzer One in three Arizona children ages 6 to 19 is overweight or obese. The U.S. Census Bureau attributes a large portion of candy consumption to Halloween. “You can make a difference by promoting healthier choices,” Ziltzer said. “Kids even prefer interesting things like tattoos and stickers over candy.” Give out water bottles. All that walking can make kids dehydrated. Pass out sugar-free gum (where age appropriate). Gum with Xylitol limits calorie consumption because children cannot eat high-calorie chocolate when they are busy chewing. Sugar-free hard candies are preferable to chocolate because they contain no fat and fewer calories. Protein bars are fi lling healthy choices. arcadiadaily.com arcadiadaily.com ARCADIA BLIND D & & SHUTTER 2921 N. 68th Street • 480-248-8047 SAVE $ 100 * OR MORE with qualifying purchases of Hunter Douglas window fashions. Page 35 October 2012 Tips Continued from page 28 to retail stores on Black Friday can be daunting, exhausting and sometimes dangerous. (We’ve all heard horror stories about shoppers being trampled to death by mobs of deal-hungry crowds). Save the time, energy and possibly your life by shopping Black Friday deals online. Many retail chains such as Walmart and Kohl’s carry door-busters both in-store and online. So, check their websites at 12:01 a.m. ET for the deals you’re after and avoid the pushy throng of people at the stores. The Desert Botanical Garden’s 11 th annual Great Pumpkin Festival runs Oct. 25-28. The event includes a hayride for adults and children out to a pumpkin patch where those 12 and younger can choose a pumpkin. Carnival style games, hay mazes and a petting zoo will be available. The festival is open 9 a.m. to noon Thursday and Friday and 8:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Admission is $18 for adults and $8 for children 3-12. Graf fi ti soils area around 48th, Osborn By Kyle Renick Graf fi ti has sprung up in the Arcadia area near 48th Street and Osborn Road. Arcadia resident Jill Jungkeit noticed graf fi ti on Labor Day when she opened her back door and noticed two different acts of vandalisms on the wall of the alley behind her home not there the night before. “It is very sad that we have tags,” Jungkeit said. “This is the fi rst time I’ve seen (graf fi ti) in our neighborhood.” The graf fi ti was similar to other graf fi ti around the Phoenix area, though likely a copycat, said neighborhood program coordinator William Hogans. Hogans said based on the style the particular tagger responsible is new to the Phoenix’s Neighborhood Services Department, which is in charge of graf fi ti prevention and cleanup. Each removal is documented and photographed using GPS cameras, and the data is sent for analysis to a contracted agency called Graf fi ti Tracker where it can be compared to other graf fi ti, Hogans said. Graf fi ti Tracker is a Web-based agency that helps “identify, track, prosecute and seek restitution from graf fi ti vandals,” Continued on page 36 Michael Saavedra, MD, FAAAAI Board Cer Ɵ Į ed in Allergy & Immunology for both children and adults. 4901 N. 44th St., Ste. 103 • Phoenix, AZ 85018 (602) 954-0405 • www.phoenixallergyclinic.com & Immunology for both children and adults. 4901 N. 44th St., Ste. 103 • Phoenix, AZ 85018 Allergy Testing Allergy Shots Rapid Desensitization Asthma Treatment Eczema Food Allergy Hives/ Contact Dermatitis Hay Fever Chronic Cough Watery, Itchy Eyes Adult and Pediatric Allergy and Asthma Care Contact us at (602) 954-0405 to schedule your appointment TODAY!
