I’ve been lucky enough to do articles on current and former Olympians Boris Becker, Teresa Edwards and Natalie Coughlin during my past three weeks here as a part of a study-abroad program through ASU’s Cronkite School of Journalism. It’s been a class like none other, to say the least. The Olympics have a unique spirit about them. They promise to inspire us with transcendent tales and usually deliver. Underdogs triumph. Written-off have- beens and wanna-bes fi nd vindication. Unknowns become world famous. It’s a chance to see the best in sports, with fewer temper tantrums and without the soured contract negotiations and millionaire vs. billionaire labor disputes. It’s hard to match the spectacle of the games, but fortunately, you don’t need to Writer re fl ects on his experiences in London covering the Olympic Games fl y across the world to see some uplifting moments in sports. The bleachers at Arcadia High School and the surrounding schools may be smaller, but they provide a much better view of the amateur ideal than any seat in Olympic Stadium. There, you get to see virtues common to athletes everywhere – hard work, dedication, and a spirit of competition – as well as a few that unfortunately aren’t. Humility, teamwork, and the ability to gracefully meet victory and defeat are a few that come to mind. You’ll also be hard pressed to fi nd another event where so many of the athletes are just there to have fun, and it’s hard to think of a more fundamental virtue in sports than that.
