ARCADIA SPORTS PAGE ARCADIA SPORTS PAGE Page 58 September 2012 Parade to return for second year By Raquel Velasco Blaring sirens, steady drumbeats, three- part harmonies and a cheering crowd will be on full display at the Shemer Art Center Sept. 28 as part of the second annual Arcadia High School Homecoming Parade. The parade, which brings a weeklong celebration to a close, will step off around 3:30 p.m. at Arcadia Drive and make its way down to Hopi Elementary School between Lafayette Boulevard and Rubicon Avenue. “Last year’s parade was successful because of the positive attitude we received from the students,” said Sara Teller, an English teacher at Arcadia High. “Without their positive effort, we wouldn’t have been able to do it again this year.” The parade was fi rst put together after members of Arcadia’s PTO felt that the student’s homecoming fl oats were so impressive they needed to be shown outside of campus. “Not only was the parade about showing off the fl oats but it was also about sharing a sense of community,” said Kris DeWulf, vice president of Arcadia’s PTO. With the help of the school, city of Phoenix and the Shemer Art Center, Arcadia’s fi rst Homecoming Parade was a success, DeWulf said. The parade brought more than 300 visitors to the streets. There were more than 25 entries from club organizations such as the spirit line, dance team, sports teams and Homecoming King and Queen courts. Local and county law enforcement of fi cers displayed their colors. Teller said she hopes this year’s event brings even more parade watchers. “The parade is a chance for the community to see the positive things students are doing outside of the classroom,” she said. Following the parade, the Arcadia Titans will be playing the Maricopa Rams in the homecoming game.
