For the fi lling: 3 cups coarsely chopped dates 1/4 cup granulated sugar 1 1/2 cups water For the crust and topping: 1 cup fi rmly packed brown sugar 1 3/4 cups fl our 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. salt 1 1/2 cups old-fashioned rolled oats 3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) very cold butter, cut into small cubes Preheat oven to 400 degrees. In a nonreactive medium saucepan over low heat, combine dates, granulated sugar and water. Cook, stirring constantly, until thickened, about 15 minutes. Cool completely. In a large bowl or bowl of an electric mixer, place brown sugar, fl our, baking soda, salt and oats. Mix on low speed until combined. While mixer is running, add butter one or two pieces at a time. Mix until crumb like, with some lumps of butter no larger than pea size. Using your hands, press and fl atten half of crumb mixture into a greased 9- by 13- inch pan. Spread cooled fi lling over crust. Cover with remaining crumb mixture, patting lightly. Bake until lightly browned, 25 to 35 minutes. Cool slightly and cut into bars while still in the pan. Gently remove cut bars from pan. Serve warm or at room temperature. Date bars stored in an airtight container refrigerate and freeze well. Cookbook Continued from page 42 Janine said. When the bars come together, a combination of savory and sweet create a treat both adults and children will enjoy. “I love making these with my kids,” Janine said. “I like to make things with them that don’t have to turn out perfect. The kids can learn and have fun, without worrying about exact measurements.” Math and science comes to life in the Campo kitchen. Flash cards showing fractions and age-appropriate science lessons are taught as the date bars are pressed into the pan. Seven-year-old Adela and 5-year-old John participate, laugh and learn. Janine said they bake a lot. “If we are going to eat sweets, I try to have us bake them ourselves. Page 45 September 2012 Writers scheduled to meet for conference in Tucson By Dorothy Anderson Have you ever dreamed of becoming a writer, but pushed such thoughts aside because where to start seemed overwhelming? Or as a fl edgling writer, have you found yourself stalled and didn’t know a way out? As a board member of The Society of Southwestern Authors, the Metro-Phoenix chapter, I want to share with you that the SSA is having its 40th annual Wrangling for Writing Conference this October. Here is your chance to get answers and become rejuvenated. The SSA is an organization for published authors in every genre, but as a service we open our conference to all who want to write or further their writing talents. The theme for this conference is: “A new century in publishing – how things are changing in writing and publishing and new trends.” The conference takes place this year at the Doubletree Inn in Tucson. For those who will be traveling to Tucson and want to be there for the opening presentations, the conference starts the afternoon of Oct. 12 with a reception and a chance to mingle with the presenters. The conference begins right after breakfast included in your fee and continues Oct. 13 and the morning of Oct. 14, plus an afternoon gathering of poets. Our keynote speaker is Stefan Kanfer who wrote and was an editor for Time Magazine for more than 20 years. Jo Jance is our featured speaker. She has had 47 books published, mostly in the detective and thriller genre. The other 15 presenters will cover a wide range of topics including the magazine market, media technology, writing and critiquing skills, common errors in author submissions, and there will be published writers in poetry, romance, the Christian market, paranormal books, crime books and international thrillers. I am also a presenter and will discuss and perform examples detailing the evolutionary changes in story writing from thousands of years ago to now and possible trends for the future. This is your opportunity to meet with published authors at meals, coffee breaks, cocktail hours and pick their brains. Cost is $215 for society members and $245 for nonmembers.
