When asked about her specialty, Driscoll’s chatter quickly comes to a stop - a long pause as she can’t quite think of it. “The Morning Glory Muf fi n is probably he one thing I have to make every day. We lways sell out. If we didn’t have them, our ustomers would probably rebel,” Driscoll aid. The Morning Glory muf fi n is true to its name: Spectacular in fl avor, unbelievably moist and a true gift to the start of your day. After sampling a variety of items within The Herb Box Market pastry case, the reason for Driscoll’s long pause is obvious. The market doesn’t need a specialty, everything is special. The lemon bar is, to this lemon-bar connoisseur, simply the best I’ve ever had. And exciting items like S’mores Marshmallow Pops are as delicious as they are fun. The whoopie pies are something you’ll want to surprise your kids with after school. The pie will warm your heart and remind you of sitting at the table with your grandmother and a giant glass of milk. The same can be said for the cake, however, and the cookies and the precious little cupcakes that look too good to actually eat. Every single thing is stunning in taste and presentation. Date bars bring back childhood Janine and Adela Campo begin making date bars with a lesson in measuring. By Amanda Goossen For Arcadia resident Janine Campo, it took one small cookie to bring her childhood back in an instant. “Two years ago at my daughter’s preschool in San Francisco we had a tradition. The mothers would all drop off the kids and once a week we’d eat together. One person would provide the whole meal. It was fun and sometimes even competitive. It was great to bond us together.” One such lunch date had a dessert Janine recognized. “A single bite took me back in a fl ash to being on the fl oor in my childhood home with my little Dorothy Hamill haircut. It was immediate food association,” she said. The treat was a date bar. It was her childhood in a small square cookie. Janine had asked her mother about a certain speci fi c childhood favorite for many years, to no avail. She described her memories, trying to place the fl avors she loved. After the bite at the preschool mother’s lunch, Janine immediately called her mom. “I called my mom and she said, ‘Oh those silly date bars? Yes, you used to love those.’” Janine said. “It was the elusive taste from childhood I’d been searching for.” Now, together with her own children in the Arcadia area home the family moved to just more than a year ago, Janine bakes up date bars on a regular basis. “They used to come in a box in the ‘70s.” Continued on page 44 Need a menu? Page 43 September 2012 What are you reading? Book Club wants to know By Amanda Goossen “What are you reading?” A simple question I hear every day. For those who know I’m a book reviewer, it’s a natural question. For others, it’s just what you ask your friends. So I ask you, “What are you reading?” Email me at Amanda@arcadianews.com and let me know. I read what publishers send my way, but I’m dying to know what others are sitting in bed reading at night. Tell me about it. Tell me about the books that make you turn the page, faster and faster. Fill me in on what you love, hate and adore. The Arcadia News Book Club will meet 6 p.m. Sept. 20. For the second month we will gather at Terra Java Coffee House and Bake Shop, 3619 E. Indian School Road. If you’d like to join our growing group, email me. Just how far would you go to protect your life, your child and the social stature you’ve always known? For Heloise Lewis, the only divorced women in her upper middle class neighborhood, taking care of her son is her only concern. Even if that means creating a small business by day and playing madam to six employees, while also servicing a small group of clients on her own, by night. When a suburban madam becomes front- page news, Heloise becomes entirely too aware of the pressure of her job. Afraid for her life, she can’t decide which way to turn. Lipman’s ability to develop a sympathetic character, whether a whore, mother or businesswoman proves her tremendous skill at portraying far more than meets the eye. An absolute must read.
