Page 4 September 2012 Get the phone, a computer is looking for your vote By Dale Messmer Did you get a new computer for back to school? Me neither. Don’t know why I would, since I’m not going back to school, but a guy can hope. I don’t really need a new computer. This one’s perfectly fi ne, though maybe a little dusty. I could clean it, of course, but new ones come already cleaned. A bunch of dads at Hopi made sure there were new iPads for the classrooms this school year. Pretty cool. I like my iPad very much. That story is on page 31. I hope the kids appreciate the dads’ efforts, and I hope they get a lot out of the new tablets. Let’s see what else we have this month for you. Well, there’s another education story on page 28. Arcadia educators went to the Sally Ride Science Academy this summer and learned a bunch about helping motivate students in science and math. Some of those kids may someday invent an even cooler machine than that new computer I want. That would be something. Forgive the shameless, self-serving plug, but we continue our award-winning coverage of breast-cancer prevention with two good stories on page 33. Since we’re all touched in some way by the disease, we think it’s a good cause to support. There’s going to be another Homecoming Parade this year at Arcadia High School. That story is on page 58. I used to love the homecoming parade when I was growing up in Tempe. They never let me help make a fl oat in high school, though, since the limits of my art abilities stop at stick fi gures. There’s more to read, of course, but before I run out of room, I have to ask: are you tired of the elections yet? Me too. I mean, for President, one guy has had four years to convince us to vote for him, and there’s only one other viable choice. Then there are the local elections. One would-be state legislator in my neighborhood has called (at least her recording machine did), stopped by the house looking to chat and mailed us something every day for about a zillion days in a row. Maybe the job pays more than I think if she wants it so badly. I’ll look into that and maybe run, then buy my own new computer. There’s the phone. Someone else looking for my vote, no doubt. Got to run. Thanks for reading the Arcadia News .
