Page 39 September 2012 THE BREADFRUIT 108 East Pierce Street www.thebreadfruit.com Rum and island spices make The Breadfruit a must-visit By Amanda Goossen Dwayne Allen and Danielle Leoni have found a balance of everything they love and feel passion for within the quaint and comforting walls of The Breadfruit, 108 E. Pierce St., their downtown Phoenix Jamaican restaurant and Rum Bar. From the dreams of Allen and Leoni to serve Phoenix residents a modern take on traditional Jamaican recipes, a restaurant was born four years ago. Allen’s own childhood in Jamaica, as well as his grandmother’s culinary education, carved the path. “We took what Dwayne knew and we replicated it,” Leoni said. “We asked ourselves what would his grandmother want on the menu and then we asked, ‘How would our guests want to eat it?’ “We wanted to create something for people who can tolerate spice and tropical ingredients and who were seeking different fl avors from what Phoenix-area restaurants were already serving up,” Leoni said. And from that, The Breadfruit menu was born. Traditional, yet modern. Stylized plates with sustainable foods from local farmers and meat suppliers. Weekly organic egg deliveries from New River. Meats coming from The Meat Shop, a downtown old-fashion butcher shop that remembers what it’s like to create relationships with meat customers and promises to only carry local meat free of hormones and antibiotics and raised in a humane fashion. The Breadfruit partners with people and businesses that think alike. “If I wouldn’t feed it to my family, I wouldn’t feed it to you,” Leoni said. And on top of it, this couple gives back to the people who need it most. On their fi rst night of business, The Breadfruit gave a portion of its proceeds to a children’s hospital. And the couple continues to fi nd time and money to give whenever necessary. “Everything is circular,” Leoni said. “Our part in that circle is to feed our people real food.” And they are doing that -- to perfection. The Rum Bar, which was once an art studio next door, serves $6 small plates from 5 to 7 p.m., as well as a $5 Cure All Punch, which features rum and fruit juices, changing daily at the whim of the bartender. Instead of Happy Hour, here it’s called A-Rum-A-Therapy and starting in September, a late night version will be offered. With more than 120 rums from around the world, this bar is intricate and serious. The Breadfruit is all about the sipping rum, whether on the rocks or inside a well- thought-out cocktail. Like the food, each drink is made with intense passion and freshly squeezed juices; melded herbs and even a few spices enrich each sip. “Rum is a beautiful spirit,” Leoni said. “It’s like a fi ne scotch or cognac. It’s not regulated the way other liquors are. The way it’s treated, the way it’s handled, brings out the unique fl avors. Each one is signi fi cantly different from the other.” The Breadfruit back patio even has space for a quiet moment and a cigar. Just like the rum, the cigars can be matched to taste and preference. In the dining room, hours of hard work and determination are apparent. Leoni’s vision of handcrafted recipes with premium ingredients shines from each plate. Tropical fl avors burst from every bite. Molasses lollipops are an absolute must- have.
