Page 28 September 2012 Arcadia teachers receive science, math class aid By Raquel Velasco Math doesn’t have to be dry, and science doesn’t have to be dull. After attending the Sally Ride Science Academy this summer, a handful of Arcadia-area teachers are bringing copious amounts of enthusiasm for science and math back to the classroom this fall. The idea, said Tavan Elementary School principal Margaret Serna, is to “ignite them.” Held each July in San Diego, the four- day academy shows teachers how to engage students in science, technology, engineering and math by showing them the different jobs they could pursue. “We’ll be able to help students understand there’s a whole plethora of careers out there,” Serna said. It could be anything from an illustrator for anatomy and physiology publications to an astronaut to a wildlife biologist to a wastewater treatment plant chemist. “It’s giving them ideas of what there is to do,” she said. The Sally Ride Academy, founded by American astronaut Sally Ride and funded by ExxonMobil, advocates math and science in the classroom. Ninety educators from the nation were invited to attend this summer including: Serna and Margie Gustafson from Tavan Elementary School; Elizabeth Missal and Nan Wilkinson from Arcadia Neighborhood Learn Center; and Diana Bode from Hopi Elementary School. The Sally Ride Science Academy uses a train-the-trainer model. Academy graduates are expected to train other teachers during the 2012-13 school year. Graduates and their trainees received sets of the Sally Ride Science Cool Career book series for classroom use. “Outside of career opportunities, students need to be literate in science, technology, engineering and math simply to keep up with the world outside the schoolhouse doors,” Serna said. In addition to sparking interest in STEM by supplementing the traditional math and science curricula, the Academy aims to address gender-bias issues to ensure girls are encouraged to follow their interest in these subjects. “Addressing this trend begins in the classroom,” Serna said. Since 2009, the academy has directly trained more than 650 educators, who have returned to their districts and trained more than 4,800 additional educators. By the end of the school year, more than 600,000 students will be impacted by the program established by Ride who passed away from Continued on page 32 Last month was our first column in the Arcadia News and we were so excited to be a part of this great new community, we forgot to do a proper introduction. We are new to the neighborhood so to put our best foot forward we want to earn your trust and invite you to our train- ing studio to show you what we do bet- ter than any fitness facility in the valley. Simply grab the punch card below and bring it in. We know if you train with us Five times you’ll see why we are the right place for you. See the article title? This is on the back of a Results Only T-Shirt you receive when you become a new member at Results Only. It seems simple enough but rarely does it become a reality until you begin your journey. Occasionally a new client asks, “What is the least I need to do to get in shape?” When we are done rolling our eyes, we ask a series of follow up questions reveal- ing their exercise habits, daily food plans, and the time devoted to achieving your goal. We want to know where you will start. Too many people think they know how to get in shape after seeing a TV infomer- cial or an article in a magazine. A good trainer should have as much importance as a doctor in your health care. It’s our job to see things you don’t see and we see it on a weekly basis. At Re- sults Only we assess a client by looking at the way he/she walks, is there a limp, is one hip higher than the other, does the person have good posture, if not why, and countless other important facts that determine how we write a fitness plan to help the client move and feel better. AND all of this happens before we attack the fat loss program that you walked in the door for. We understand people usually come into our facilities to lose weight or fit into their clothes better. The Challenge? The client who walks in and already knows everything. The reality is they don’t or won’t do it. We hear things like, “I know I need to clean up my diet?” “I should make time but my life is too busy.” You Can Have Excuses or You Can Have Results! You Can’t Have Both! By Bobby Kelly, CPT ADVERTORIAL Or my favorites, “I want to join but I don’t want to do too much, I am not going to lift weights and I don’t want to sweat.” REALLY? What exactly do you think we can do for you if you have already made up your mind what you’re not going to do? Bottom line– If your way was working you wouldn’t need to join a gym or hire a trainer! There is no way to reach your goal with- out putting in the time, cleaning up your diet and making an investment in your- self. Spend a little time and money now dedicated to fitness or spend a fortune on your health later getting poked and prodded at a doctor’s office or hospital. Do it now learning from a qualified pro- fessional, in a motivating and creative environment, listening to upbeat mu- sic and surrounding yourself with like- minded, fun people. Or the Alternative, a hospital bed, sur- rounded by sick people, grey walls, that bad smell of unhealthiness and oh yeah, the sick people? Look... “I’ll do it when I have time.” “I don’t have enough money.” “There is no one to watch my kids.” “I don’t like to sweat.” Excuses, Excuses, EXCUSES! “Would you rather exercise 45 minutes a day or be dead 24 hours a day?” Head down to the Gaslight Village at 36th St and Indian School. Our trainers invest time and money on education and are up to date on recent studies. C’mon in and we take care of everything. Once you take responsibility, the excuses go away. Then and only then you get RESULTS. www.resultsonly.com What’s on your plate tonight?
