Page 10 September 2012 Warrants enable of fi cers to attack mosquito areas By Steven Sarkis Maricopa County recently encountered its fi rst death this year from the mosquito- borne West Nile virus. Each year during the monsoon season, to help prevent similar tragedies, judges from across Maricopa County are signing warrants to locate and correct conditions that permit mosquitoes to breed. These warrants allow of fi cers from Maricopa County Environmental Services to enter potentially hazardous properties - properties that pose a risk to their neighborhoods as a result of green pools, green spas or other neglected bodies of water that over time become prime breeding grounds for mosquitoes West Nile virus is a mosquito-borne virus that can affect both animals and humans. Although death is extremely rare from the bite of a mosquito infected with the virus, the Maricopa County Department of Public Health reports that about 20 percent of those infected will develop fl u-like symptoms such as fevers, headaches and body aches. In vulnerable populations, including the elderly and small children, the virus can be even more dangerous. To prevent mosquito bites, public health of fi cials recommend using insect repellent and limiting outdoor activities around dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active. In addition, to help prevent mosquitoes from breeding in and around your property, eliminate areas where standing water may build up such as bird baths, fountains and potted plants. If you know of a house with a green pool or other body of water that may be harboring mosquitoes, please report this to Maricopa County Environmental Services. Such properties pose a hazard to the health of the entire neighborhood. For more information on West Nile Virus, to report green pools or fi le a mosquito-related complaint, call the Maricopa County Help Line at 602-506- 0700 or go to: www. Maricopa.gov/wnv.
