Ice Age: Continental Drift Directors: Steve Martino and Mike Thurmeier Starring: Ray Romano, Denis Leary and John Leguizamo Four is at least one, possibly two or even three too many movies for this series. Please let this be the last one. In this newest installment in the series, Manny the mammoth (Romano), Diego the saber-tooth (Leary) and Sid the sloth (Leguizamo) get separated from the other animals, including Manny’s wife and daughter. On their quest back home, they encounter everything from sirens and pirates to what appear to be prehistoric guinea pigs. At the other end of the journey towards reunion, Manny’s daughter, the now-teen Peaches, is having trouble with a boy mammoth she likes. The obstacles standing in her way of a potential relationship include his popularity, the opossum in her family, and especially it seems her best but unpopular molehog friend. Oh, and there’s the fast-approaching end of the world. Can I get a, “Why does this always have to happen to me?” If this story doesn’t include every cliché, it must get pretty close to the mark. There’s the overprotective father who “ruins everything” for his teenage daughter, the possibility of their last words being an argument, the drama of the daughter liking a boy who’s too cool to be smart, the best friend who obviously likes the teen girl but goes as unnoticed to her as she does to the popular boy, etc. The list could go on. With any series of movies, especially animated ones for kids, it’s easy to overdo it with sequels. Sometimes gold is struck and the additional fi lms only enhance the enjoyment brought by the fi rst, which is what happened with the Toy Story and Shrek sagas.
