Theater assists disabled By Raquel Velasco Harkins Theatres has installed closed captioning equipment for the hard of hearing and video description technology for the blind in nearly all of its 346 Arizona movie screens. The technology is part of a legal agreement over a federal disability accommodation case brought by some blind and deaf customers, as well as the state of Arizona and the Arizona Center for Disability Law. The Scottsdale-based chain will provide headsets for blind moviegoers to hear narration of the fi lm’s action, character expressions and other visual aspects. For those who are hearing impaired, personal closed-captioning devices with digital text displays will be available. “Guests who have utilized the equipment during the installation phase have expressed their positive sentiments,” said Heather Roberts, a Harkins spokeswoman. The devices are free for any fi lm and show time if the movie has captions. “I think it’s important for people who have disabilities to be able to enjoy movies along with everybody else,” said Arcadia resident Alan Garcia, who has a hearing- impaired brother.

Page 51 August 2012 competition “because you actually get to think.” “I just have to use my brain,” she said. “I never hurt myself doing that.” In addition, Swinford said she enjoyed “getting to meet new people.” Nick Saccone, who has been a regular at Thursday night trivia at Hazelwood’s for three years, started playing when someone told him about it. “It’s good to be smarter than other people,” he said jokingly, adding the most dif fi cult part for him was “putting up with his teammates.” His team has been in fi rst place six weeks in a row. Different bars host a different number of events on various nights of the week. A Trivia DJ, or T-Jay reads out the questions. And since room rankings are read aloud either in between halves or before the fi nal question, coming up with a good team name is a big part of the fun and a sub- goal seems to be to make the TJ say some pretty outrageous things. Ranging from the ribald to corny, some of Phoenix’s top-ranking teams right now are “You Don’t Know Jack,” while others include “Shut the bathroom door” and “And in fi rst place.” The game is divided into two halves, each consisting of four rounds. In the fi rst half, questions can be worth 5, 3 or 1 points, depending on the con fi dence the team has in the answer. In the second half, teams can bet either 6, 4 or 2 points on the answer and, for the fi nal answer, each team can wager up to 15 points. Much of the time, the event is as much fun for the TJ as the participants. Jonathan Garter, a fourth-grade teacher at Clarendon Elementary School, hosts trivia during the summer months. “I like the work,” Garter said. “I’m a social person and it gave me the opportunity to meet people.” Garter started hosting nights four years ago and before that was a player.
