Page 44 August 2012 Plenty of top-rate choices with Phoenix music scene By Craig Goossen Whether you’re inside with the AC blowing or combating the unrelenting rays by splashing in the pool, music has the power to make everything cooler. Discovering new music in these times of varied options can be a tricky and time-consuming venture, but for those that brave the constant journey of seeking music, it’s the best of times. These featured tracks were discovered on my never-ending quest for music and have been on steady rotation during the dog days of summer. Plus each of the mentioned bands can be seen in Phoenix area venues in the coming month. DAX RIGGS Gravedirt On My Blue Suede Shoes Riggs is a hard rock veteran who’s transformed himself into a modern-day bluesman. Armed with a voice that’s right up there with the best, it’s the stompers like this track that remind you it’s only a matter of time before more folks fall for his mighty powers. Dax Riggs performs on July 31 at the Rhythm Room, 1019 E. Indian School Road. SAINT MOTEL Benny Goodman This four-piece out of Los Angeles has the chops and pop charm capable of taking over the summer airwaves, not unlike Pumped Up Kicks by Foster The People did last summer. Saint Motel performs Aug. 7 at the Rhythm Room, 1019 E. Indian School Road. FUTURE BIRDS Wicked Game Hailing from the fabled music town of Athens, Ga., Future Birds keep the summer s o u n d t r a c k going with a breezy cover of Chris Isaak’s “ W i c k e d Game.” The track is taken from this year’s excellent Record Store Day release, Live At Seney-Stovall Chapel. Future Birds performs Aug. 18 at The Sail Inn, 26 S. Farmer Ave., Tempe. ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL Choo Choo Ch’Boogie If you love classic American music, this swinging track by veterans Asleep At The Wheel will be right up your alley. The track, from the bands self-titled 1974 release, with its easy country twang and boogie swing is a solid fi t for any good time activity. Turn the volume up and nobody will complain. Rather, they’ll be tapping their toes and bopping their heads. Asleep At The Wheel performs Aug. 22 at the Crescent Ballroom, 308 N. 2nd Ave. THE FUNK ARK High Noon This D.C. out fi t ably provides your favorite new summertime party music. Cool funk, world fl avors and a perfect dose of Latin spice make this new release from The Funk Ark a great score. The Funk Ark performs Aug. 28 at The Sail Inn, 26 S. Farmer Ave., Tempe. NEIL DIAMOND Girl You’ll Be A Woman Soon Neil Diamond is without question a living legend. His career achievements are astonishing and his early work tends to be undervalued. This track from 1967 may even prompt you to snap up a few more of his ‘60s classics. If you opt to pick up any of his well-known ‘80s catalogue however, you may need to brave that listening party on your own. Neil Diamond performs Aug. 29 at US Airways Arena, 201. E. Jefferson St. Los Angeles native Craig Goossen grew up in the night clubs, bars and record stores of the L.A. music scene. Now an Arcadia resident, he fi nds enjoyment through his music collection and the venues and shops dispensing sounds in the Phoenix area. Bars turning trivia into competition By Christina Sampson Many people enjoy a game of trivia, but some Arcadia bars have turned the activity into a sport. Well, something else to do at the bar that involves leagues, at any rate. Several local taverns, including Hazelwood’s First Place Sports Grill and the Arcadia Tavern, host Team Trivia nights, which are actually franchise events from The Answer is Productions Inc. Katie Swinford, who was attending for only the second time at Hazelwood’s on a recent Thursday, said she liked the Continued on page 51 Christ Church Lutheran LC-MS In Christ We Grow Th at Others May Know Sunday Worship 8:00 & 10:45 a.m. - Traditional 8:30 & 10:30 a.m. - Contemporary 12:30 - Spanish Service Wednesday Worship 7:00 p.m. Saturday Worship 5:00 p.m. Sunday School / Bible Classes 9:40 a.m. (Nursery Care At All Sunday Services) Visit our website www.cclphoenix.org e-mail us at christchurch@cclphoenix.org 3901 E. Page 45 August 2012 Book Club adds Skype talk with author to meeting By Amanda Goossen The Arcadia News Book Club is growing quickly and I thank everyone who has enjoyed their time with us each month. We’ve had new guests at each meeting and our regulars from the very beginning are sticking with us. If you haven’t had a chance yet, join us this month for an evening of books, snacks and even a conversation with the author. Suspense author Andrew Gross will be Skyping with us from his home in New York. At 6 p.m. on Aug. 30, we will meet at Terra Java Coffee House and Bake Shop, 3619 E. Indian School Road. We have started a book exchange, so please bring a copy of a book you would like to trade. If you’re planning to attend, please let us know: Amanda@arcadianews.com. AUGUST BOOK CLUB SELECTION 15 SECONDS By Andrew Gross Andrew Gross, the masterful man behind fast-paced, suspense- fi lled favorites like Reckless and Eyes Wide Open , sends chills down your spine once again, in 15 Seconds. When hot-shot plastic surgeon Dr. Henry Steadman heads to Jacksonville, Fla. to give the keynote address at a Doctors Without Borders conference, he assumes he’s about to embark upon a relaxing day. Getting confused in traf fi c, however, sets him upon a series of strange events, beginning with a loud mouth and abrasive cop who seems to have confused him with someone else. Taken from a moment, which actually happened to the author last year on a book tour, Gross’ description will have readers terrorized with fear. While the rest of the novel is pure fi ction, the characters, drama and deranged villain out for revenge will have each page turning faster than the last. Dr. Henry Stedman may not know it, but his entire life is about to change. Fiction: GOLD By Chris Cleave Fans of Chris Cleave’s popular novel Little Bee will once again fall in love for a novel about emotion, about family and about the way each of us will deal with life in an instance of trouble, turmoil or passion. Gold is the story of three British cyclists trying to get into the 2012 Olympics. The story may be incredibly timely, but that’s not the only reason it works so well. Cleave’s ability to structure characters and emotion with a raw and intricate balance, is an absolute thing of beauty. Zoe, Jack and Kate may be competing on the racetrack, but they also are fi ghting for each other. This novel may appear to be about a race toward gold, but it’s actually about friendship, family and the sacri fi ces some will make, while others frantically fi ght to the end. This story will stick with you, long after the pages are turned. RULES OF CIVILITY By Amor Towles It’s New Year’s Eve 1937. Katey Kontent and her roommate Eve are in The Hotspot, a Greenwich Village nightclub, 4 feet underground. A jazz-quartet fi lled the room with sounds these two Manhattan secretaries didn’t really understand but would soon be the talk of the town. When a handsome man named Tinker Grey enters the club he singlehandedly sets their world on fi re. While Eve is the more attractive and outgoing of the two, Kate has caught Tinker’s eye and a fl irtation begins. The time, place and elegance of Rules of Civility is quite possibly the lead character in this novel, with a story of men and women struggling with class, fi nances and their role in society. The bright lights of the big city shine, as author Amor Towles gives readers a story of two women fi ghting for the same thing, whether it’s worth it or not. Non fi ction: THE PIONEER WOMAN COOKS: FOOD FROM MY FRONTIER By Ree Drummond When Ree Drummond started her blog in 2006 to showcase her cooking and photography from her cattle ranch in Oklahoma, the world she created could not have been i m a g i n e d . The Pioneer W o m a n blog shot to massive s u c c e s s , f e a t u r i n g easy and imaginative recipes, detailed with great advice and gorgeous pictures.
