It’s not September, but it’s time for classrooms to fi ll By Dale Messmer Before computers and cell phones topped the back-to-school shopping list, September was the end of summer vacation and the start of class. Hasn’t been that way in a long time, but I still Pthink of September as the back-to- school month. Habits die hard. Sure fi re proof that the school year has started is the opening of prep football season. And sure enough, Arcadia High has two August games, so that’s the of fi cial start of school. I can’t count the number of prep football games I’ve seen in my life. Several hundred I’m sure. This year, though, will be one of the most interesting on the sideline. Jim Ellison has transformed his Titans into a perennial playoff contender and a hard-nosed ballclub. All while being one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. It’s hard not to root for his team. So, again (I know this sounds repetitive), I’m encouraging you to stop by the fi eld and catch a game or two. Bring your younger kids. It’s a good way to get them excited about being Titans one day. First home game is September 7. Nate Humphreys takes a preseason look on page 58, and the complete schedule is on page 60. I know that study after study tells me more women read newspapers than men, but you are the ones in charge, ladies. So if kids are going to get the chance to watch high school football, it’s going to be up to mom. There’s plenty of non-sports back-to- school material in this month’s paper, of course. Dr. James Doris has good advice for keeping kids healthy in the school environment. His column starts on page 13. New columnist Nola Enge discusses how to pick the right fi rst school for your child. That starts on page 22. Even this month’s Where’s the Neighbor column has a school theme, as Kaley Kalil looks at an Arcadian teaching English to preschool kids in China. And on page 42, there’s a good recipe for an easy stir-fry dish that will help keep kids healthy no matter what they eat when they’re out of your eyesight.
