Page 30 August 2012 Grab those car keys and head out for some local fun By Kaley Kalil Is the explorer in you eager to rediscover what our beautiful desert has to offer? A short drive can get you out of the Phoenix concrete and into its often- underappreciated scenic surroundings. Here are four back-roads expeditions just begging to be discovered by the family this weekend. Pack up the kids and load up the dog. It’s time to get some dirt on those SUV tires. Carefree to Seven Springs With names like Easy Street and Tranquil Trail, Carefree is an easygoing town nestled in the strikingly lush landscape of the Sonoran Desert. It’s a fun and leisurely drive casually winding its way through quaint cafes, fun Western restaurants and vibrant crafts markets. But, what many visitors don’t take advantage of is the continued drive to a paradise past Bartlett Lake called Seven Springs – one of my favorite places to camp. Embedded in the Tonto National Forest, this overlooked campground offers a more primitive camping environment without giving up amenities such as tables, grills and restrooms. It’s a charmingly wooded area full of Sycamore and Cottonwood trees standing tall along the creek -- ideal terrain for hiking. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for the countless bird species frequenting the area. Beeline Highway to Payson For this trip, you’ll want to wake up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed; it’s worth the extra hours in the day. What you’ll lose from not sleeping in, you’ll gain in picturesque panoramas of the surrounding desert highlands. This windy Highway 87 takes you through boulder-covered canyons and past plateaus wrapped in wild fl owers. You’ll also enjoy impressive views of grand mesas along the horizon. It’s a very peaceful, intimate journey. Don’t forget to grab a slice of homemade pie at the Beeline Café in Payson before continuing to nearby Barnhardt Canyon. Take plenty of pictures. Page 31 August 2012 grassy rolling hills and absolutely spectacular vistas as you climb in elevation. You’ll pass by small communities like Congress and continue through the larger, well-known destination of Prescott until you hit the turnoff to 89A. You’re now headed to a former mining town known today as the “Largest Ghost Town in America.” You’ll ascend into tall pine trees through a series of switchbacks along hair-raising cliffs. Needless to say, you’ll want to keep both hands on the wheel for this one. Don’t miss red-rocked Sedona and the San Francisco Peaks in the distance. This four- hour trip lands you in the hilltop ghost town of Jerome, well worth exploring. You can get back to Phoenix in about two hours if you take State Route 260 to the I-17. Lincoln Boulevard to Scottsdale Road If you don’t have time for a day trip, but want to feel as if you drove somewhere fun, try cruising along Lincoln Boulevard Tips Continued from page 30 from the 51 to Scottsdale Road. Drifting fi rst through the Biltmore and then Paradise Valley, this in-town jaunt has just enough curves and dips to make the drive stimulating. And the scenery? You’ll enjoy exceptional mountain views of both Squaw Peak and Camelback Mountain for the duration of your drive. I recommend stopping in Old Town Scottsdale for a late lunch or early dinner before heading back into the fi ery sunset. Free Baby Splash Swim Classes are offered for babies under 6 months of age at Hubbard Family Swim Schools. The 30-minute water-acclimation classes give parents or caregivers a chance to learn excellent tips on how to enjoy tub time at home with baby and also learn how to prepare baby for swim lessons. The temperature of the heated, indoor swimming pool is 90 degrees all year long. Advanced registration is required. For more class days and times, call (602) 971-4044. Students to donate hair to aid cancer victims By Amanda Goossen On Aug. 23 the students at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic School will hold the 2012-2013 kick-off for their community service program, STA Serves. For the second year, STA Serves will begin their giving with The Mane Cut, bene fi tting Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths. “STA Serves’ mission is to teach students that service to others is essential,” said Emily McLaughlin, the program’s chairwoman. “STA Serves will help set the stage for a life-long involvement in providing service to others.” Pantene’s Beautiful Lengths program helps women fi ghting cancer receive free, real-hair wigs. Through a partnership between Pantene and the American Cancer Society, more than 24,000 free real-hair wigs have been donated to cancer patients. Participants must have at least 8 inches of hair to donate. Hair must be unbleached, free of permanent color and chemicals and contain no more than 5 percent gray. It takes six or more ponytails to create one real-hair wig. At the fi rst Mane Event a year ago, St. Thomas the Apostle Principal Mary Coffman, along with the more than 450 students, teachers, staff and numerous parents watched as 11 students, one 4-year- old sibling, and three parents gave up their hair for those fi ghting for their life. Fifteen ponytails were donated, totaling more than 10 feet of STA hair. Hairdressers from Salon Surreal will once again donate their time to not only cut hair at St. Thomas, but also clean up the cuts afterward, at their salon. STA Serves is working with numerous organizations throughout the year to develop a versatile way of giving to the local community as well as charities reaching outside the U.S. “STA Mane Event is the perfect event to kick off a year of service,” McLaughlin said. “Donating hair is such a sel fl ess act of giving. Children are able to participate in giving something truly of themselves for the bene fi t of others.” 30th Street & Indian School Road • 602.957.8402 Lindstrom Family Auto Wash Your Neighborhood Car Wash Visit us at LindstromAutoWash.com for the “Deal of the Month!” Not valid with any other offers.
