Page 50 July 2012 More summer books for time at beach or on sofa By Amanda Goossen It’s summer time and hopefully you’re taking the time to enjoy a bit of down time, whether on a beach or on your living room sofa. During this much needed rest and relaxation, I hope you choose to pick up a good book or two. To help you with your summertime book selections, I have a list of both old and new, in a multitude of genres. ARCADIA NEWS BOOK CLUB The Arcadia News Book Club (new members are always welcome; please email Amanda@arcadianews.com to let us know you are planning to come) will meet at 7 p.m. July 26 at The Black Cat Coffee House. We will be discussing BEST KEPT SECRET by Amy Hatvany. Also, as a group we’ve decided to begin a book swap. Please bring a book you’d like to share and you’ll get to take home a book from a fellow member. As always the book club will feature coffee and dessert, as well as giveaways from local companies and book publishers. BEST KEPT SECRET By Amy Hatvany Cadence doesn’t want to drink. She promises herself every morning that today will be the day she starts a n e w . Yet the r e a l i t i e s of a failed marriage, the career she had chosen to give up and the experience of caring for her five-year- old son, all alone, prove to be too much. Cadence masterfully hides the bottles, over explains her behavior and truly believes her slow descent into alcoholism is a secret only she can see. The truth, however, is that everyone, even her precious son Charlie is watching as her life begins to spin completely out of control. One of my favorite books of last year, I believe “Best Kept Secret’’ is one of the most well-written, honest novels I have ever read. Spine-chilling, emotional and even completely lovable, Amy Hatvany created a novel of mere perfection. I bring it to our book club this month because it’s simply too good to be unknown. Fiction: IN THE BAG By Kare Klise In her fi rst novel for adults, Kate Klise creates a lighthearted story about travel in the modern world. As a father and son board a plane to Europe, the father accidentally bumps into a mother who is accompanying her daughter to France. As he forces her to spill her wine, he sees her face and can’t stop thinking about her. He even goes as far as to leave a mysterious note in her purse when they exit the airport. When Coco opens her bag in France, she discovers a wrinkled mess of clothes and realizes she has the wrong bag. When Webb and his dad arrive in Madrid, he also learns he has the wrong bag, which sets off a series of sweet, funny and mischievous events between the two teenagers. Let the love, romance and mayhem begin. “In the Bag” is a terri fi c novel, perfect for your summer vacation. Just don’t lose your bag! TRUTH LIKE THE SUN By Jim Lynch Roger Morgan is a well-known fi xture of Seattle. As the mastermind behind the 1962 World Fair, Roger made himself and his city famous. Then four decades later, at the age of seventy when he decides to run for mayor, an up and coming young reporter, Helen Gulanos, realizes that the story behind Morgan could take her career to exciting new heights. The story is written with precision, easily navigating between 1962 and its present time, telling two stories while really telling one. The characters are charming and extremely powerful. Truly a political drama all readers will enjoy. CARRY THE ONE By Carol Anshaw A car full of drunk and stoned friends exits a wedding reception, only to hit and kill a ten year old girl on a dark country road. Twenty- fi ve years later, they are each still dealing with the aftermath. While some strive and others fail, this in your face tale of turmoil and growth proves that each and every one of us deals with things in our own way. Anshaw’s writing, characters and brutal honesty about human nature will have every reader question how they would move on from disaster.
