Page 42 July 2012 Safe grilling must include proper place, cleanliness By Christina Sampson It’s summertime, and the unmistakable smell of barbecue has been wafting through parks and backyards of Arcadia. Regardless of when, how or what is being grilled, however, there are some general things to keep in mind, even before that fi rst hot dog or grill basket of vegetables hits the grate. First, always grill safely. The National Fire Protection Agency reports that between 2005 through 2009, 29 percent of home structure fi res involved grills that had been started on a patio, courtyard or terrace. Children under 5 years old account for 22 percent of all thermal grill burns. The agency offers several easily implemented measures to avoid becoming an unfortunate statistic. Simply cleaning a grill can literally bring an older grill that may seem broken back to life again. “Usually a good cleaning solves all the problems,” Padilla said. He explained that no matter what a person does, grease from food will drip below the grate and when that happens “sooner or later it’s going to plug those holes.” “People ask me how to keep their grill clean and I tell them, ‘Don’t use it,’” Padilla said. And although he’s joking for the most part, constant use of a grill — like any other major appliance — does take its toll. Sure, most people heat the grill and scrape old gunk from the grate. “That cleans the bottom of the grates, but where your food touches on top, it doesn’t do anything,” Padilla said. When it comes to the dark, inner depths of the grill, most people just don’t think about what’s getting down there. For example, Padilla pointed out, when it comes to the drip pan, people have a tendency to forget it’s there at all. As a depository of grease, that can be dangerous. Grease is fl ammable and, in addition to the inevitable buildup, “sooner Continued on page 44 T H R O U G H S E P T E M B E R 1 1 T H AT FOX RESTAURANT CONCEPTS www.foxrc.com/100days PLAN TO ATTEND OUR community dinners monday, july 30 monday, august 20 6 - 8 pm 3 pm - 6 pm monday - friday ALL DAY ON SUNDAYS $4 select red or white wine | $4 select beers $5 well drinks | eats starting at $2 H H H H HA A A A A AP P P P P P PP P PY Y Y Y H H H HO O O O OU U UR R R R R R R J O I N U S F O R *Does not include tax or gratuity $45* PER PERSON 4-COURSE MEAL WITH BEVERAGE PAIRINGS SPACE IS LIMITED!
