Page 31 July 2012 Fun at the beach available just a short drive from here By Kaley Kalil Ready to hit the beach this summer but tired of always running into your neighbors and colleagues in San Diego? Have your kids been to Rocky Point so many times, they have their names written on a grain of rice in fi ve different languages? If so, it’s time to try something new. Here are four beach vacation spots close to Phoenix that are sure to make the whole family happy: Catalina Island, Calif. Located 22 miles off the Southern California coast, Catalina Island is the perfect spot for outdoor enthusiasts. Horseback-riding, hiking, snorkeling, scuba and kayaking are a few of the activities you’ll fi nd here. Renting a golf cart is a fun, inexpensive way to explore the island. The shopping in Avalon is great and the food is even better. To get here, hop on a boat in Newport, San Pedro, Dana Point or Long Beach and have your camera ready for the picturesque arrival. San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico Less than an eight-hour drive away (and worth every mile) sits the charming little beach town of San Carlos. Located on the Sea of Cortez, visitors are delighted with seven beaches to choose from. Scuba dive with sea lions, go wreck diving, boating or enjoy a mile-long kayak ride to observe all of the different water birds. Take the kids snorkeling and watch their excitement with all of the angel fi sh, crabs, octopus and star fi sh you’ll see. By no means is this town bustling and busy, but rather, there are just enough tourists to make you feel comfortable and relaxed. Watch out for jelly fi sh and string rays and don’t forget your pasaportes . San Clemente, Calif. Known as “The Spanish Village by the Sea,” San Clemente is located between Los Angeles and San Diego. This relaxed coastal town boasts beautiful mountain views, and its Mediterranean style sets a very romantic atmosphere. With a plethora of restaurants to choose from, you won’t go hungry.
