His aspirations are to land a dream job that does something with scienti fi c research, making discoveries and writing about them, he said. One reason: high building costs required by some Arcadia developers during the 1940s and 1950s to attract wealthy residents resulted in well-built homes. But for Jean Updike, who with her husband, Edward, recently renovated and moved back into the Arcadia home she grew up in, the reason for returning to the neighborhood is simple: The house, built by her parents, is the family homestead. “I’m so glad they did it,” said Celesta Rowland, Updike’s youngest of two daughters. “It’s been such a family home.” “All kids grew up coming here,” Rowland said, referring to the family’s second and third generation of grandchildren, nieces and nephews. The history of the Jones home largely re fl ects the story of the Arcadia neighborhood. Luther and Thelma Jones met in 1946 in Phoenix. Thelma, at the urging of an old friend who already was out West, came to Phoenix from her home near Philadelphia to train as a nurse. When she met Luther Jones, he was in the Army Air Corps and working as an airplane mechanic at Williams Air Base in Chandler. The couple married in April the following year in Pennsylvania and, after spending a year in New Jersey, moved back to Phoenix into a small apartment on 9 th and Brill streets. Luther Jones began taking business and math classes in college, eventually getting a job with the Neon Sign Company.
