Unfortunately nearly 100 children and adults drown in Arizona each year. Drowning is the leading cause of death for children 4 years and younger. A surprising number of adults drown each year in pools, spas, lakes and oceans. The nonpro fi t Safe Kids Coalition has taken a close look at the causes of childhood drowning. The major factors fell into fi ve categories: lack of supervision, no barriers to the pool, no CPR skills, no swimming skills and no life jackets. When you pay attention to all fi ve categories of prevention, you can make a difference and keep your loved ones – big and little – safe this summer. Remember: Always give children your full attention around water. After a child drowns, adults often report they just looked away for second or they didn’t hear or see anything until it was too late. Never swim alone. A common reason an adult dies in a pool is swimming alone and having a heart attack or seizure. Arizona Revised Statute 36-1681 requires a swimming pool be protected by an enclosure (wall, fence, or barrier) that surrounds the pool area, unless a local code provides otherwise.
