Page 6 June 2012 Good cast hidden in ‘Shadows’ Dark Shadows Director: Tim Burton Starring: Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green and Helena Bonham Carter Confusingly simple, Dark Shadows tried too hard to please. Based on the 1960s TV show of the same name, the lm features Barnabas Collins (Depp) cursed to be a vampire and buried alive by a witch (Green) after he breaks her heart. Two centuries later, he is released from his prison and returns to the world. But things in the 1970s are drastically different from the 1700s. Still, he’s determined to get revenge on the woman who wronged him. Upon moving back into his family mansion, he nds his descendants in need of his help. On top of everything, there are many secrets behind the walls of Collinwood Manor. An immense amount of pressure has been put on this newest remake. Not only does it have to live up to the expectations of the original TV series, it’s also a comedy made out of a dramatic soap opera, and a Tim Burton lm featuring multiple well-known actors. Perhaps this was all too much, because the resulting movie seems to collapse under the weight of it all. The plot sounds easy enough, but its path is jumbled and lost along the way. Halfway through the movie, viewers start to question where it’s actually going. Wait a little longer and it becomes obvious the destination is nowhere. Rather than focusing on the intriguing storyline the original TV show sets the stage for, this lm wants desperately to be a comedy. While it is possible to make something creepy and funny, and Tim Burton is the man to do it, this time wasn’t one of them. To make things worse, there is one joke worth laughing at, but it’s not funny after the fourth use. Another shame is the misuse of what could’ve been an amazing cast.
