Page 52 June 2012 Arcadia singer-songwriter chases lifetime passion By Heather Gross Jenny Jarnagin has a passion for music that shows in the way she writes songs. The Arcadia resident has been practicing music for almost her entire life. Jarnagin learned to play the piano by ear at the age of 3 and has studied music ever since. Jarnagin grew up in Oklahoma on property that had been in her family for generations. The small house on the property that eventually became her grandfather’s chicken coup was the house into which Grammy award-winning singer/songwriter Jimmy Webb was born, Jarnagin said. “It’s kind of an interesting connection,” she said. After living in Oklahoma her early years, Jarnagin’s family moved to Canada, where her passion continued. She started music lessons at 5 and continued through high school and college. Jarnagin studied at the Victoria Conservatory of Music, as well as the St. Petersburg State Conservatory in Russia where she studied for a summer as an exchange student during college. She received her bachelor’s degree in piano performance from Texas A&M University, and got her master’s in music from Northern Arizona University. Now, Jarnagin has put her many years of musical training to work. “In the last two years I nally did what I’ve always wanted to do -- write and record music,” she said. Jarnagin has written and recorded six albums and more than 90 songs in the last two years, and is ready to record her seventh. She writes all of her music, with occasional co-writing from a member of her team or her mother, Linda Jarnagin. To raise money to record her seventh album, Jarnagin launched a Kickstarter project that ended March 28. As part of her Kickstarter project, Jarnagin released behind-the-scenes videos of her music- making on her website. “The (music) business has been changing, with everyone getting free downloads,” Jarnagin said. “As an artist you need to have something more to offer.” The Kickstarter project is what Jarnagin offered. “I just thought it would be a really fantastic way for people to be able to see real musicians, in real studios and see how an album is constructed,” Jarnagin said. She described her music as a Broadway- pop style. “A lot of the lyrics are very honest and brutally truthful; sometimes comical,” she said. “And I think that gives the music a real theatrical feel.” She said she’s been fortunate to have the opportunities she has had. “I’ve met some incredible artists, some who have gone on to be successful and some who like me, are having some small success, but working their way up,” Jarnagin said. “For me the music has been therapy. It’s so freeing to use the gift God gave you and be able to express yourself,” she said. Most rewarding, she said, is when people tell her how her music has affected them. “My overall goal as an artist is to support myself in a way that would promote my own writing and performing,” she said. She said she would love to tour one day and currently has plans for performances in the works. “So my goal is to be able to continue to write and continue to be creative, and at the same time make a living,” Jarnagin said.
