Page 42 June 2012 Phoenix Boys Choir seeks singers through auditions By Caroline Hester Phoenix Boys Choir is holding monthly auditions for new talent for its training and cadet choirs. The choir is one of America’s largest and most renowned and is looking for boys 7- to 14- years old. “Every opportunity I get to encourage someone to audition for the choir, I do,” said Ken Curry. Curry has lived in Arcadia for 14 years and his son, Christian, has been a member of Phoenix Boys Choir for seven years. Auditions will be held these Saturdays: Aug. 18, Aug. 25, Sept. 8, Sept. 22, Oct. 13, and Nov. 10. They will continue in 2013 on Jan. 26, Feb. 9, March 9, April 13, and May 11. “All we look for at auditions is a good ‘ear’ for music and an unchanged voice. We will teach the rest,” said Cate Hinkle, the director of marketing for the choir. Members will learn how to read music, establish good vocal production through good posture and healthy breathing techniques, learn sight singing and more. Additionally, as the boys move up through the choir levels, they will have increased opportunities to perform, as well as make lifelong friendships, Hinkle said. Curry’s son is 14 and currently is a member of tour choir, which is the fourth and highest level of the Phoenix Boys choir. In the last year, Christian has traveled to Venice to sing in St. Mark’s Cathedral and the choir was selected to perform on a West Coast Tour of The Lord of the Rings- In Concert. “We feel lucky to have a choir in Phoenix that has a national reputation,” Curry said. “The places the boys get to go and the things they get to do, they are really unique opportunities.” The Phoenix Boys Choir encourages a wide range of boys of all circumstances and backgrounds to join, Curry said. The program has scholarships and fundraising opportunities. For auditions, boys need no prior experience or preparation. “If a boy likes to sing, that is all the preparation needed,” Hinkle said. Christian Curry had no previous choir experience and was encouraged by a cousin to join. The family attended a concert and Christian decided he wanted to try out. “I think my son would say, and I denitely would, that making the choir a priority has been the right decision,” Curry said. “You get introduced to a wide Continued on page 53 PRIVATE DINING ROOMS AVAILABLE FOR YOUR PARTIES PLEASE CONTACT MODERNSTEAKPDR@FOXRC .NET FOR MORE INFORMATION OR TO MAKE YOUR RESERVATIONS TODAY! Summer reading for adults: The Shoemaker’s Wife By Adriana Trigiani This sprawling epic was inspired by the author’s own family, telling the tale of star- crossed lovers, brought together and torn apart far too many times. Love, loss and the importance of family bleeds from every page. Trigiani, a fantastic writer, has created her most spectacular novel to date. The Art of Forgetting By Camille Noe Pagan Now in paperback, this heart-wrenching tale of friendship has the nerve to ask one terrifying question: Is your best friend, still your best friend if she u n e x p e c t e d l y becomes a totally different person? When Julia gets hit by a cab and suffers d e v a s t a t i n g memory loss and a complete personality change, Marissa is forced to question how far she can go to support the one she loves. So well written, this novel (in hardcover) was one of my top ve books of last year. Appetite For Life: The Biography of Julia Childs By Noel Riley Fitch The remarkable Julia Child has always been a lovable character, and in the biography of her life, beginning as a volunteer with the OSS during WWII and eventually, at 37 when she takes a cooking class and realizes what she is meant to do with her life, we are only given more of this entertaining and enjoyable soul. The Magicians By Lev Grossman Now in paperback, Grossman gives us a thrilling tale of a high school genius suddenly faced with the reality of his young magic obsessions. When Quentin is admitted to a secret college of magic, he is bombarded with the dark facts he never imagined could be true. Conversations at the American Film Institution with Great Moviemakers: The Next Generation, From the 1950s to Hollywood Today By George Stevens Jr. Avid movie lovers, as well as casual fans, will enjoy this impressive collection. Information regarding some of the most inspiring lmmakers of our time come together to create an interesting and enlightening read. The Gilboa Iris By Zahava D. Englard One of the most surprising novels I’ve read in some time, The Gilboa Iris is a knock-you-off your-feet story that captivates on every single page. Taking place in Israel, America and Germany from 1983-2002, the author tells about terrorism we rarely stop to think about. The constant ght of the Israeli people to secure their land and stand up for their culture is breathtaking. Summer reading for kids: Ready To Read: Have You Seen My Cat Ready To Read: The Greedy Python Both by Eric Carle One of the world’s most beloved authors and illustrators brings his stories to the Ready to Read series.
