Page 4 June 2012 Plenty of summer books, resorts for vacation time By Dale Messmer Summer reading. Book publishers aren’t the only ones who like those two words. Many of us nd room in the suitcase for vacation books. Most importantly, summer reading is essential for children. I think we should have full-year school to keep kids from losing a lot of what they learned, but that’s a topic for another time. Summer reading helps plug that brain leak. Both adults and children get a good list from Amanda Goossen in this month’s Book Club news (page 43). Our book expert has a big list of good reading for the beach or by the pool, and there’s an impressive list of children’s offerings. Check it out. Amanda also looks at the history of some of the area resorts (page 36). For those of you not heading to San Diego, there’s a nice directory of some local places for stay-at-home vacations, too. June is also the month of Father’s Day, which as far as I can tell is the barefoot cousin of Mother’s Day. I mean, when was the last time you saw a professional athlete wave to Dad from the sideline? Plus it seems power tools are still a popular present for Dads. Christina Sampson takes a look at that trend and others (page 28). Me, I barely know the difference between a hammer and a screwdriver. Now they have power versions of both. I nd that scary. I’ll take a good book and a resort reservation. I’d like to say a special goodbye to Ken Rudolph, who is stepping down as baseball coach at Arcadia High School. Ken is a class act, and not just because he was helpful and responsive to reporters and editors of this newspaper whenever he was asked. His many years in professional baseball provided plenty of fascinating stories and insightful instruction for 14 Titan teams. Twelve of his clubs made the playoffs. Nathan Humpherys takes a good look at Rudolph’s life and his tenure at AHS on page 58. Two good stories I hope you’ll read and enjoy. No matter what you choose to read this month, thanks for including the Arcadia News in between chapters of that summer book. 3641 N. 56th Street, Phoenix • 480-945-9537 • www.popphoenix.org Northeast corner of 56th St. and Indian School Preschool Fall Classes start August 9th!
