Page 34 June 2012 Mayor’s adviser travels to several interesting places By Kaley Kalil Phoenix native Colin Tetreault and his wife, Jenny, have lived in Arcadia since a year ago March. “We have found our neighborhood to be more than a place to live; it is a true community, lled with gracious, kind and caring people and families,” Tetreault said. Since January, Tetreault has been serving as the senior policy adviser of sustainability to Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton. He oversees the development and recommendation of policy pertinent to sustainability for the 520-square-mile area of Phoenix, which has a population of 1.5 million people. While busily preparing for a visit with the Secretary of Energy, Steven Chu, Tetreault made time to share some personal travel stories. During the past several months, his work at the mayor’s ofce has taken him to Portland and Washington, D.C. “I particularly enjoyed spending time in D.C. with the secretary of energy,” Tetreault said. “I was directly next to him on a Colonial-era couch in his ofce. We discussed emerging technologies and the future of energy. It was at that moment that I thought, ‘Wow, this piece of furniture was around at the founding of our nation. We’re sitting on it and discussing physics and business.’” Tetreault was no stranger to travel when he joined Stanton’s ofce ve months ago. He has spent time traveling in Sweden, Japan, Mexico, across the U.S. and through parts of Europe. Recently, his favorite trip has been to Japan in 2009, where he completed the Ironman Triathlon. “After 2.4 miles of swimming, 112 miles of riding and 26.2 miles of running, you are in a different place than when you started,” he said. “While competing in Japan, you nish the marathon by running through a Shogun-era castle and into a cheering crowd of hundreds of people. It doesn’t matter that they don’t know who you are; the crowd goes wild whenever a competitor comes down the nishing chute.” It also was on this Japan trip that Tetreault realized he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Jenny. “As I crossed the nish line, there she was,” he said. Tetreault has competed in three Ironman triathlons and plans to compete in several more, both in the U.S. and abroad. He also lived in Kalmar, Sweden for about six months while consulting and Continued on page 35 Colin and Jenny Tetreault Lower School Campus 4800 E. Doubletree Ranch Rd. It also helps that part of my family heritage hails from Sweden.” Tetreault said he and his wife “rejoice in the variety and wonder of things different than ourselves.” “The world is such an interesting and complex place. I certainly know that my travels have helped shape who I am, both professionally and personally.” Tetreault and his wife hope to visit Argentina this fall for their belated honeymoon. They look forward to dancing the tango, sipping Argentine Malbec and getting lost in Buenos Aires. Traveled lately or know someone who has? Contact Kaley at kaley.kalil@gmail.com. Neighbor Continued from page 34 Four vacation places to visit right here in Arizona By Kaley Kalil Ever wonder what it would be like to sleep in a teepee or discover huge underground caves? Does the idea of hanging out where the stars used to go excite you? Or, maybe the opportunity to learn how to better your future while improving the planet interests you? Don’t let your summer slip by while you monotonously fall into a rhythm of watching every Seinfeld rerun on TV. Twice. Here are four seriously cool things to do in Arizona well worth getting up off that couch. Sleep in a wigwam in Holbrook Two of three surviving Wigwam Villages – a motel chain that originally had seven locations throughout the U.S. – are located on Route 66 in Holbrook. Fifteen teepees made of concrete and steel are arranged in a rectangular shape to resemble a traditional Indian village. Though the units are numbered from 1 to 16, there is no 13 th unit. Built in 1950 by Arizona motel owner Chester Lewis, this famous hotel is based off of the original architectural plans of Frank Redford. Though Lewis passed away in 1986, his sons and daughter continue to run the hotel today. For more information, call 928-241- 8413 or visit www.sleepinawigwam.com. Go underground at Kartchner Caverns Nine miles south of Benson lands you in an underground limestone cave system that has been growing for more 50,000 years. Discovered in 1978, 2 ½ miles of passages are now open for public viewing. Guests are able to see the world’s longest soda straw stalactites and the world’s most extensive formation of brushite moonmilk – a white, creamy substance found inside caves. Campgrounds, hiking trails, a hummingbird garden and an amphitheater also are available for tourists. Part of the cave is closed during the summer because more than 1,000 cave bats roost there during the summer. Visit www. azstateparks.com/Parks/KACA for more information.
