The deep, stuttering, whomp-whomp-whomp sound tells me we’re dealing with a lot of torque and power; a tremendous amount of force emanating from a highly efcient jet engine. Translation: keeping a helicopter in the air is a marvel of engineering. The screaming whine of the exhaust that is echoing off all the streets and homes in Arcadia tells me we’re dealing with a motor that runs at extremely high temperatures and revolutions. We’ve come a long way from the turn- of-the century grainy movies that show some guy on a bicycle who pedaled like crazy to get some deathtrap copter to do nothing but crash. Translation: jet fuel is expensive. I bet it’s a $10 a gallon at least. I imagine the howling chopper up there burns 1000 gallons of fuel an hour. A little extrapolation of the numbers here tells me we’re looking at roughly $166 per minute in fuel costs alone. As I was trying to gure out how many minutes the bird has been in the air, the Nightsun dimmed and the helicopter headed west. By the time I got back to the scene of my crime, everyone was gone. I feel bad about making the emergency call so quickly, without investigating a little more. It seemed like the right thing to do at the time, of course. I do have to say this: Maybe I’ve been stricken from the list, but I haven’t seen a single e-mail about neighborhood crime since Chopper Night. You may see Greg roaming your neighborhood at night with a ashlight in one hand and a cold drink in the other. The dog will be on a leash and from now on, the cell phone will remain in the pocket until he is provoked. Reach Greg via e-mail: greg@arcadianews.com.
