Page 20 June 2012 Burglary, home invasions discussed at annual meet By Christina Sampson Burglary and home invasions were topics discussed during this year’s annual Arcadia Camelback Mountain Neighborhood Association meeting May 12 at the Prince of Peace Church. Community Action Ofcer Ben Carro, of the Phoenix Police Department, gave attendees a brief, informational statement about what to do should residents suspect suspicious activity or be the victims of a burglary. Richard Rea, president of ACMNA, stressed the issue was not in response to any particular increase in area incidents. “We’ve always had burglaries in Arcadia because we have things that thieves can easily fence for drugs or whatever,” Rea said. “But it’s not like there is this rash of burglaries.” Rea said that because of email chains or neighborhood online groups sharing information or stories of incidents that do occur, “it makes it seem as though there are more than there are.” “What we try to do is sensitize the people to the things they can do to avoid it,” Rea said. Some of the advice from the meeting included: First, get a description of any person seen leaving or around the area after a crime has taken place. Secondly, if a vehicle is spotted, attempt to be a specic as possible about its color, make and model and ideally get at least part of its license place. This is important, Rea said, because “generally thieves do not go from place to place.” Thirdly, note the time and exact location of the person or yourself. And nally, Rea said, if something just doesn’t feel or seem right, do not hesitate to contact the police. “It’s a matter of heightened awareness and heightened security,” he said. City of Phoenix Police has a new online service for reporting minor theft, vehicle burglary, lost property and other crimes. Residents may use the online option to report criminal damage, fraudulent use of debit/credit cards, identity theft, lost property and theft, among other crimes. To access the service, visit phoenix.gov/ police. The online system is part of the city’s focus on innovation and is expected to save nearly $1 million annually. “ HAPPY FATHER ’ S DAY , POPS . ” Neil Germundson Toyota Fleet Manager NeilG@RightToyota.com 7701 E.
