It’s also a time to remind the men we love to take better care of themselves. Men’s Health Month was created to raise awareness of preventable health problems in men and boys. Men die almost six years younger than women, and men are less likely to seek medical attention for routine and preventable problems. Check out the most recent stats on adult men in the United States from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: • 12 percent of men are in fair or poor health. • 22 percent smoke. • 48 percent do not meet the recommended guidelines for aerobic activity. • 32 percent have had ve or more drinks in one day at least once in the past year. • 33 percent are obese. • 31 percent have hypertension. The top three reasons men die are heart disease, cancer and accidents, in that order. Men can do a lot to beat the odds. At any age, start by being healthy. Get a physical to know what’s good and what needs improvement. Quit smoking. Quit coaches, many who are ex-tobacco users, offer free help at the Arizona Smoker’s Helpline, ashline.org or 1-800-556-6222. Drink in moderation. Get regular exercise. Get screened for diabetes and make sure cholesterol and blood pressure numbers are in the normal range. Tetanus shots are recommended every 10 years. Physicians also will talk about STD screening tests and safe behaviors. Last year, the HPV vaccine also was recommended for men by the CDC.
