Page 6 May 2012 Must-see docudrama a timely fi lm Bully Director: Lee Hirsch Starring: Alex Libby, Ja’Maya, Kelby, the Longs and the Smalleys A must-see, Bully is a documentary that couldn’t have come sooner. The fi lm focuses on fi ve families dealing with the effects of bullying in different ways. Two of their children have taken their own lives to end their misery, and their families try to get the schools’ and authority’s attention on the serious threat to students. The other kids the movie follows are still suffering, and cameras follow them to school to experience what’s happening fi rst-hand. While most of the movie follows students and families, some parts focus on the assistant principal of one school and how she handles bully situations. Her attempts at solving the issues made most of the audience grumble in discontent. For example, when a boy was having trouble with another one bullying him, rather than holding the tormenter responsible for his constant teasing, she made them shake hands. When the young victim refused to accept the other’s insincere apology and shake his hand, she told him, “You are no better than him for not shaking his hand.” In reply, he voiced what most of the audience was thinking, “Except I don’t beat up other kids.” This is an intensely gripping documentary, and almost everyone older than 12 can bene fi t from watching it. The theme hits close to home for almost everyone, and it’s hard not to fi nd one of the students or situations to relate to. Not everyone in America is being bullied, or has been, but most people know someone who has. This is a much-needed fi lm, since a large amount of the population will only stop to think about bullying for a few minutes, while this forces the audience to focus on it for almost two hours. The fi lming was smartly done, making the stars even more real. The cameras were able to capture the fast-paced scenes without jostling and making the audience dizzy. The footage was selected well so some of the scenes were slow, but never dull. After negotiating with the Motion Picture Association of America, some of the language was cut and it got a PG-13 rating. It may not be the raw material now that it’s been edited, but it still has the same effect since the audience can tell what the bullies are saying. This way, schools can show classes the fi lm, and get it to students the age of the ones in the movie. Bullying is a popular topic these days, and it’s been having a much more serious effect on the victims, such as self-harm or threatening and hurting others to make it stop. As seen in the movie, students sometimes are unwilling to admit there are any problems at school. And, though to them it may be easier to do so, keeping it to themselves often can make it worse. One of the families who lost their 11- year old son, Ty Smalley, founded an organization to educate people and help stop bullying. Started in 2010, Stand for the Silent has grown rapidly and is featured in this movie. (standforthesilent.org.) I give Bully 4 stars and suggest it for both teens and adults. It may be better if a friend or family member tags along, as it will most likely spark a discussion afterwards. Garden offers night tours By Caroline Hester The Desert Botanical Garden invites visitors to its annual summer Flashlight Tours to experience and learn about the unseen wonders that come to life when the sun goes down in the Arizona desert. “It’s quite an adventure,” Pamela Levin said. Levin is the volunteer manager who has been on the Desert Botanical staff for eight years and coordinates the summer fl ashlight event. “Most people have never seen the desert from the different perspective of the night,” Levin said. “It can be lovely, especially with a full moon.” The tours are 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdays and Saturdays from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The Flashlight Tour has been a Botanical Garden tradition for about 15 to 20 years, Levin said. For the past four years, the tours have been modi fi ed to be a more educational, self-discovery exploration. “All the stations set up on the tour have scienti fi c content,” Levin said. “Our volunteers who lead the stations are all very well versed on the content they are presenting.” During the Flashlight Tour, visitors Continued on page 12 Stop by for a Free Goodie Bag Stop by for a Free Goodie Bag No Purchase Necessary No Purchase Necessary Daily Giveaways including BOTOX, LATISSE, Skin Script Daily Giveaways including BOTOX, LATISSE, Skin Script products and more the week of May 21 through May 26. products and more the week of May 21 through May 26.
