Page 54 May 2012 Swim club now accepting applications for summer By Chad Koch The Arizona Marlins Swim Club is now accepting applications for their 2012 summer team. The Marlins are a year-round competitive swim team that has had a summer program for the last 30 years. The Marlins have had a number of swimmers who have continued their swimming careers in college. The summer program, however, is a low-pressure, skill- based, instructional swim program for children ages 5-14. Mike Maczuga is the original coach who has served and managed the club since 1982. His brother, Ken Maczuga, has been a coach for the club since 1986. Both are American Swimming Coaches Association certi fi ed. ASCA certi fi cation is designed to identify and recognize professionally prepared coaches on a national level. The two coaches said they aim to teach their swimmers with understanding, enthusiasm, and cheerfulness. “Our swim lessons are low-pressure and have a family-friendly environment.” Mike said. The Maczuga’s will hire as many coaches as they need in order to have a 1-to-10 teacher-student ratio to make sure each swimmer gets suf fi cient instruction. “It’s all about the skill-stroke development,” Mike said. “During the fi rst three days of each week we simplify the basic skills of a swim stroke and the fourth day we hold a swim meet. “We want the swimmers to master the stroke, then we give each of them a blue ribbon for completing the meet instead of just giving out fi rst, second and third ribbons.” The six-week program runs from June 4 through July 12.
