Page 4 May 2012 It soon will be summer, when the living is easier By Dale Messmer I’ll freely admit you will not be the fi rst person to call me crazy when you read the next sentence. I’m looking forward to the summer. Always do. I like it hot. The hotter the better, especially this year. For one thing, as a native Phoenician, I have such fond childhood memories of the summer. Irrigation football. The Water Wiggle at my grandparents’ house. Knocking down toy soldiers by spraying the hose at them. No shoes most of the time. Mud pies. Hide and seek in the twilight of the day instead of homework. For the most part, summer was pretty cool as a kid. As an adult, I will admit, it isn’t as much fun, but it still beats being cold. The arthritis is better when it’s hot, too. And I still don’t wear shoes unless I have to from May through September. This summer is especially important to me, though. I need it to bake away a particularly bad case of Spring Fever. That cooped-up, open-the-doors feeling most of my fellow Valley residents get at the end of summer hits me harder at the end of winter. I can take air conditioning just fi ne, thanks. Arti fi cial heat is a pain. A day without sunshine is one day too many. This year, work was more dif fi cult than usual in March and April. The urge to blow off everything for a trip to a Spring Training ballpark was debilitating. Reading a good book in the sunshine beckoned constantly. Worst case of Spring Fever in the history of Man, I’m convinced. I set a record for the number of afternoons longing for a nap in the sun. It may take two or three weeks of triple-digit heat to cure me. Enjoying the temperature in the 90s as I do could mean an extended case of the Fever. I need May to be hotter than usual. But please don’t blame me if it happens. Editors should, but don’t, have super powers. If I had super powers, I’d make sure there were more bulletin boards like the one I saw the other day. There was our Hopi School garden story from last month on a board at Lindstrom’s Auto Wash. Prominent play near the exit. Very rewarding to see that someone thought one of our stories was worth displaying that way. Thanks to them, and to you, for reading the Arcadia News .
