However, they were disappointed with the park. “The online ad for the park makes it seem larger than it really is,” John said, “As I am unable to easily transport from my wheelchair, I couldn’t go on any of the rides. So, as a result, I spent over $100 to take a ‘walking’ tour through Hogwarts and drink a butter beer.” John was born with spina bi fi da and is con fi ned to a motorized wheelchair. His disability often makes travel dif fi cult. “(At the airport), I had to have a full pat down and as I have both a urostomy and a colostomy, he made me wipe those areas with a specially-treated cloth to see if I was concealing any type of explosives or drugs. Not a fun thing to do in a crowded airport,” John said. “When we got on the plane, we saw we were in the second row. I had to have two big Sky Caps lift me over the seats to get to mine.” Though travel was exceptionally dif fi cult at the airport, John said he was impressed with the ease of getting around at Disney World. “They really have a very inclusive attitude when it comes to diversity,” he said. “Every other bus was equipped with a wheelchair lift, so it was quite easy to visit all fi ve parks.” John and Kathy stayed at the Port of Orleans Resort at Disney World. His favorite part of the trip was visiting the Wild Animal Park. “We’ll surely visit Florida again. Disney World is great,” he said. “I’ll never visit Universal Studios again until they realize it’s the 21 st century and make it more accessible to people with disabilities.” John has been to Mexico and Alaska. He plans to visit New York City in February to attend the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show with Levi. In the future, he hopes to visit Ireland, Scotland, Italy and the horse farms in Kentucky. “Crufts, the largest dog show in the world, is in England. I sure hope to make it there someday,” he said. John and Kathy also plan to go back to Orlando for their 60 th birthdays. “We are both big Avatar fans and James Cameron is joining with Disney to build a Pandora theme park based on the movie,” he said. They hope to rent a van while there and drive around the Gulf Coast. “Traveling with a disability is so complicated that if it weren’t for my dog doing so well on the show circuit, I’d think twice about attempting it,” John said. “But, once all the plans are set and paid for, it turns out to be worth it.” I.S.A .
