Page 25 May 2012 By Greg A. Bruns Those who have traversed their way through the American work force will recall staking their claim to the sectional prison known as the cubicle. It was the only refuge one had in a sea of other cube dwellers and since people spend the majority of their waking lives in the cubes, it’s good to personalize the space with a poster or two. Give it some pizazz and personality and sum up your core beliefs about life something whimsical and comforting, like an image of a kitten dangling by a tree branch with a clever message like HANG IN THERE!. One of my all-time favorites is as follows: LACK OF PLANNING ON YOUR PART DOES NOT CONSTITUTE AN EMERGENCY ON MY PART. It is this very message that is climbing through the hazy recesses of my brain while I’m sweating out an anxiety attack at Gate D23 in Atlanta. The reason for this is because the ticket agent at the gate is able to create an expression that broadcasts this message exactly, without saying a word. After a nano-second of eye contact with me, I’ve been completely fi gured out, classi fi ed and organized in the agent’s mind. There’s nothing I can say he won’t be ready for, so before the words is this the fl ight to Phoenix? even work their way out of my Temporal lobe he points to another counter and says, “he’ll have to re-book you over there.” But the thing is, this fl ight is scheduled to leave at 11:45 a.m. and according to my watch it’s 11:33 a.m. I’m told in an exasperated tone, “the plane leaves at 11:45, you’re right – but the doors close ten minutes before.” Of course they do. And some days it appears they close 12 minutes before. So you can either come down here and sit at this gate and waste an hour of your life before the fl ight leaves or after, waiting for another one. I decide not to engage in my side of the argument, since I’m at fault for stopping at a little shop to buy a magazine. I know they have to close the door sometime. I fully understand that there’s no way I’m getting on that plane unless I’m ready to engage in hand-to-hand combat with an Air Marshall. My luggage is on that plane. And someone who isn’t me is currently sitting in 2A, probably laughing right now at the idiot who had a fi rst class seat, checked in at the airport over an hour before the Continued on page 23 W.R.
