Page 20 May 2012 Jennifer Cranston Law Day set nationally this month By Jennifer Cranston May 1 is Law Day, a national day set aside to recognize the important role law plays in American society. It was fi rst established by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1958 and then more of fi cially acknowledged by a joint Congressional resolution in 1961. “No Courts – No Justice – No Freedom” is this year’s Law Day theme. The focus is on the importance of the courts to ensure justice for all and the serious impact that recent budget cuts have, and will continue to have, on the ability of state and local courts to function effectively. According to the National Center for State Courts, state judiciaries handle approximately 95 percent of all cases fi led in the United States. Yet, 42 of those state judiciaries (including Arizona) suffered budget cuts last year. It also has been reported that most state courts receive less than 1 percent of their state’s entire budget. No-charge events are planned to celebrate Law Day around the Valley. On May 12, the Maricopa County Bar Association will host an Ask-A-Lawyer booth at the Old Town Farmers’ Market in downtown Scottsdale. Volunteer attorneys will be available to answer legal questions and provide information about additional legal resources. The market runs 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the city’s parking facility at the corner of Brown and First Street. On May 1, the MCBA will host a Law Day forum for local attorneys and members of the public to learn about the impact of budget cuts on Arizona courts. The forum will be held at MCBA’s of fi ces at 4:30 p.m. For more information call 602-257-4200. Arcadia resident Jennifer A.
