Page 18 May 2012 Drink more water if you feel thirsty or you are exercising or working outdoors. Drink about 16 ounces before you head out. Then drink about 8 ounces every 20 minutes. Carry enough water with you. Sports drinks also can replace electrolytes lost by sweating. Better, yet, consider moving your exercise routine indoors for the summer or to the pool. Do not mix alcohol and caffeine with heat. This will contribute to dehydration and could cause heat-related illnesses. The heat can quickly make a healthy person ill, and, for the very young and chronically ill, heat can be even more stressful. These are the symptoms of heat- related illnesses: Heat cramps: These muscle cramps are the fi rst indicator you need to drink more water and add electrolytes, such as those found in sports drinks. It happens when you sweat a lot without replacing fl uids and electrolytes. Heat exhaustion or heat prostration: In this phase of dehydration, muscle cramps become more severe. The person sweats profusely, feels weak, and experiences nausea and vomiting. The body becomes cold and clammy. Get the person immediately out of the heat and out of heavy clothes, shoes, hats, any sports equipment, and give them fl uids with electrolytes. In severe cases, call 9-1-1, as the person may need IV fl uids. Heatstroke or sunstroke: This is a medical emergency. Call 9-1-1 then take measures to cool the person down and give water, if possible. The body can no longer cool itself, and as the body temperature rises, internal organ damage and death are possible. The person may appear disoriented or pass out. Other symptoms include fl ushed skin, vomiting, racing heart and rapid breathing. We can’t hibernate all summer, so use precautions and common sense, and we’ll all survive together. John Woellner, M.D., is a family practice physician at Arcadia Family Clinic.
