Page 14 May 2012 Scottsdale-based United Blood Services is offering an incentive through May 31 to donate blood with a chance to win a pair of roundtrip tickets to the Grand Canyon courtesy of Grand Canyon Railway. Donors will be entered to win one of 60 ticket pairs valued at $150 a pair. Each single blood donation has the potential to save three lives. Whole blood can be separated to bene fi t an accident victim, a person undergoing surgery and a child receiving treatment for cancer. The time it takes to donate varies depending on the form of donation. The most popular form of donation, a single unit of whole blood (about one pint), takes about 10 minutes to donate. The whole process of interview, donation and recovery takes approximately an hour. Donors of all blood types are in need, especially Type O. This type of blood is used in emergencies as the universal donor. To qualify to give blood, donors must be at least 16 years old and weigh at least 110 pounds. Persons between the ages of 16 and 22 are subject to additional height and weight requirements. Whole blood can be donated once every 56 days.
