Page 12 May 2012 will embark on a self-paced walk around the garden and have opportunities to visit different hands-on stations that feature various desert plants and creatures like snakes, scorpions, and tortoises. The tour around the 10 stations takes about an hour, Levin said. Yet, she said some visitors prefer to take advantage of the cooler evening environment and linger for the entire two hours. There are bene fi ts to taking the Flashlight Tours at both the beginning of the season as well as the end, Levin said. “One of the nice things about coming earlier in the season is the majority of the cacti in the garden are in bloom in May and June,” she said. “When the blooms turn to fruit and fall to the ground in July and August, it attracts more animals.” While the tours include on average 250 people a night, more people tend to visit toward the end of the season and that can lead to a more crowded experience, she said. The tours are great for families, couples and friends. It is a child safe and stroller friendly event, Levin said, and children younger than 2 get in free. Those interested in taking the tour should wear comfortable walking shoes and bring their own fl ashlight. For information, visit www.dbg.org.
