He said he has learned the value of hard work, respect and sportsmanship. “Setting goals and working to achieve them makes the accomplishment more meaningful,” Glover said. Rachel Hostetler started taking karate because her brother did it and it seemed fun and interesting. Hostetler said the greatest lesson she has learned since joining Peaceful Warrior is “to stay tough and show no pain, no matter how much you are in.” Julianna Chin-Tung, who began taking karate lessons fi ve years ago, said the most important lessons Poage has taught her are leadership and discipline. She is excited to go to nationals because it’s the fi rst time the entire team quali fi ed and almost everyone will be able to go. Chin-Tung has competed at nationals before and said she can’t wait to compete again. “You meet people from all over the country and have a lot of fun,” she said. To prepare for nationals, Chin-Tung said she attends extra classes and is constantly going over everything in her head. The students’ and their Sensei’s dedication have already paid off. Whether titles are won or not, they have been armed with the weapons of self-discipline and respect, and those are not skills that can be represented with a trophy or medal. Hostetler puts it nicely. “This experience has been nothing I could have ever imagined,” she said. “Ever since joining the dojo, my life has never been the same, and I’ve been having the time of my life.” Warriors Continued from page 62 Intern Continued from page 62 Humpherys appreciates that sportswriting has an intrinsic framework. The basic facts and stats are mainly indisputable, but you get to be a story teller and do your best to make what happened interesting. “At the end of the day you are writing a story about people and what they did, you are not writing about the statistics,” he said. Nathan will get to bring a taste of London, sports and other interests back to Arizona. What makes sports intriguing to Nathan is that the players and coaches deal with victory and defeat, which triggers strong human emotions. Athletes have worked hard to get where they are, and the sports reporter gets to see them at the moment of exhilarating success or crushing defeat. “In small ways,” he said, “you get to see almost every part of the human experience in sports. “And since it is a game, people are a little more open about showing their emotions than they would be if the stakes were different.” Think Peyton Manning’s face when he heard the Colts were going to drop him. Or Phil Mickelson’s face when he doesn’t make that critical putt. “Nathan has set high goals for himself,” Arcadia News editor Dale Messmer said. “He’s one of the hardest-working interns we’ve ever had, and he’s constantly reading professional writers and asking me about their work, how he can make his more like theirs. Quite remarkable for a writer of his experience level. “His love of writing, his professionalism and his enthusiasm will go a long way toward his goal of someday writing for Sports Illustrated or working for ESPN.” YSICALTherapy L PHYSICALTherapy L PHYSICALTher L PHYSICAL THERAPY Physical p p Therapy L THERAPY therapy physical y y PHYSICAL THERAPY Physical p p Therapy L THERAPY therapy physical py y PHYSICAL Physi Th L therapy PY y PY cal sic Therap AL THER y l Therap L THER physi Physical physical SICAL hysical p p Ther L apy physical YSICAL Physical p p Ther L apy SICAL ysical Therapy L py PHYSICAL y Therapy L therapy PHYSICAL T hysical Thera L T therapy PHYSICAL THERAPY Physical p p Therapy L THERAPY therapy physical y py PHYSICAL THERAPY Physical p p Therapy L THERAPY therapy physical py y PHYSICAL Physic Th L therapy Y Y l THERAPY l rapy THERAPY physical THERAPY Physical py py Therapy THERAPY therapy physical THERAPY Ph Y Y ysical py py Therapy THERAPY therapy Y Y physical ACHES OR PAINS?
