Page 56 April 2012 Arcadia student from ASU experiences life in Senegal By Domenico Nicosia It is 3:37 on a Tuesday afternoon in Dakar, Senegal. The Internet connection is weak. A poor connection provides a blurry video stream frozen as often as active. Audio comes in, cuts out, changes pitch, fl uctuates in clarity. Mary Hannah Smith is smiling behind bright blue eyes, that much is clear. She is sitting with a computer in her lap against a white wall in what appears to be a busy hallway. The lights are on, the Internet is functioning, luxuries not always available. Smith is spending her spring 2012 semester in West Africa. “I wanted to learn how other people live their daily life,” Smith said during a video- chat interview. From Arcadia, Smith is a junior at Arizona State University majoring in global studies. Abroad with the Council on International Educational Exchange program, Smith has been living in a homestay with nine other adults and four children, Smith said in her blog dakartobangkok.tumblr.com. After the initial shock of constant human contact passed, Smith said, “It is nice having multiple family generations living together. Page 57 April 2012 “The American family is very nuclear.” On a regular basis, Smith speaks three languages between her home and her school. French is the of fi cial language of Senegal and is widely spoken, yet in her home, they speak Wolof, Smith said. In her blog, Smith listed classes she takes near the city center in Dakar, a fi ve-minute walk from her home. These include Wolof, economic and culture classes all in French, a language she continually is working on. Her fi rst trip abroad was spent in France at the end of her sophomore year in high school. During this trip in Senegal, Smith plans on fi nding a topic for her senior thesis project and has suggested perhaps a comparative analysis of cultures. “(Senegal is) a very communal society, there is no sense of individualism,” Smith said. “Everyone relies on each other.” Cultures cross paths on a daily basis beginning with breakfast, a meal skipped in Senegal. Smith detailed daily eating practices in her blog from her personalized breakfast brought to her by the host mom to dinners eating “around the bowl,” a community plate where everyone eats with their hands. Baguettes, peanuts and sheep’s head soup make an appearance in the diets of the Senegalese. Smith said she wanted a “totally different world view. I could only do that living abroad.” She has been present at an interesting time in Senegalese politics. Current President Abdoulaye Wade is running for a controversial third term that has caused unrest and protest. Increasingly violent protests have led to tear gassing of mobs. The riots got as near as Mermox and Ouakam, two neighborhoods housing students from Smith’s program. Protesters burned tires in the streets, but the demonstration remained nonviolent, she said in her blog. “It hasn’t really impacted me at all,” Smith said. “Life just kind of goes on.” Life is Senegal is largely de fi ned by religion with a 95 percent Muslim population, Smith said. “Everything is scheduled around prayer time,” Smith said. “People will stop work or whatever they are doing to pray.” Reminders of home beckon. “My mom especially is very worried that I am going to get sick with malaria and (she) is going to have to come and rescue me,” Smith said. But that seems less than likely at this time in the year. The dry season features temperatures in the 90s, Smith said, and most of the mosquitoes have gone away. Smith began her education at the Arcadia Neighborhood Learning Center where she spent her time from kindergarten to eighth grade. She was an active member of the Arcadia softball program. “I have always been a part of that community,” Smith said.
