Page 4 April 2012 By Dale Messmer Twenty years. Think of it. All the new and improved stuff in your life. So many changes. For me, the best is the iPod. It used to require the bed of a pick-up truck to carry all my music from one place to another. Now I can do it in the palm of my hand. Amazing. Then there’s my Android. Try connecting to the world 20 years ago the way you can today. Mind-boggling. I can even look up when the iPod was invented in between ignoring phone calls. Amid all those changes, though, some things remain the same. You have good people around you and bad. You live in a good place or in Philadelphia. You care about what the people in your neighborhood are doing. The Arcadia News celebrates 20 years this month. I like to think that since taking over as editor, I’ve helped bring to you each month a better representation of the place you live, a newspaper that tells you a little something about your community that is interesting, newsworthy or both. Newspapers have changed a lot in 20 years, especially in relevance to their readers. No shortage of “experts” are predicting their demise, sooner rather than later. Of course, plenty of experts said similar things about radio, too. They were wrong. And in at least one respect, the doomsday predictions about newspapers are wrong, too. Now, I wouldn’t want to be trying to make a big-city newspaper relevant to your life. Most anything you want to know about the world you can get from your computer before going to bed. That’s tough competition, and better brains than mine have yet to fi gure out how to win that battle. Community journalism, though, isn’t going anywhere, in my opinion. No one in the world cares about Arcadia the way the people of the Arcadia News care. We want to be a part of your life. We want to help you know your neighbors. We want to be your neighbor. The good kind. So, as always, thanks for making the Arcadia News part of your life this month. We know there’s a lot more that we can do, and we’re trying. Hopefully, you will all be around with me in 20 more years to see how we’re progressing.
