Page 32 April 2012 Back then, Cole even raised and harvested his own dates, 150,000 of them, all while working 10- 14-hour shifts at the store. Now, although the 82-year-old Cole is still spry, he no longer raises the dates he sells in his store, having quit that about 25 years ago. “I had to stop that as I got older,” Cole said. “Growing dates is hard work. You Cole Continued from page 24 have to climb up and down those trees.” In 1984, the Coles moved from the stand down Thomas Road to 52 nd Street, where they stopped selling fresh produce because now he owned the small, three-store strip mall. “I don’t have the room,” Cole said. “I’d have to kick out my tenants. “I got a pizza parlor and a beauty place next door.” But he does still sell some fruit. “I have a fridge full of fruits and nuts Continued on page 33 If you want to protect your identity Talk to MetLife Auto & Home ® . Among the many things that have not changed at Arnie’s Health Food are the employees and customers. Linda Duke will have worked for the Coles for 30 years this May. When the fruit stand moved into the store, she made a model of it that is still on display in the store. And of course, there are the customers. “Ninety percent are repeats,” Cole said. “I know who they are and what they want. If it’s here, somebody has asked for it.” Because it’s been in the neighborhood so long, going to “Arnie’s” has become something of a tradition for neighborhood families. “I wait on second and third generation kids,” Cole said. “And we get a lot of business from other stores. If they don’t have something they’ll send the people over here.” Cole continues to be a fi xture at the store, completing transactions on his antique cash register. He no longer works 10 to 14 hours, but he’s at the shop by 5:30 a.m. every Tuesday through Saturday to open it up. After that, Duke comes in at about 8 a.m. Duke bags the nuts, pumpkin seeds and dates and neatly stocks the wooden shelves Cole built with everything from vitamins to organic honey to gluten-free corn pasta. She orders in more items as needed. After that, Cole said they “sit around and stare at each other while waiting for customers.” That does happen sometimes, because both Duke and Cole said they never know when they’ll be busy. “That’s why I have to stay open all the time,” Cole said. It is well recognized that the jaw joint (TMJ) problems can be caused by the Mandibular Advancement Devices (MAD). An exciting new generation of oral appliance is now available that is not a ”MAD” appliance. This appliance has 5 FDA certi Ƃ cations with over 95% success rate in stopping snoring and it has been shown to decrease the Apnea- Hypopnea Index (AHI) by 74-84%. I am currently working with the inventor of this appliance on an enhanced version. Due to the sensitive nature of this business I respect the privacy and con Ƃ dentiality of all of our patients.
