Page 30 April 2012 World celebration to be hosted by Franciscans By Caroline Hester The global celebration of World T’ai Chi and Qigong Day will be April 28 at the Franciscan Renewal Center in Arcadia. The event celebrates the health bene fi ts of these art forms while appealing for world peace. “This is a world event. It’s spiritual, it brings people together,” Don Fiore said. Fiore and his wife Tori have hosted the event for the past 13 years. All around the world beginning in New Zealand, the day will be celebrated and continue throughout the various time zones. “It’s not a small thing, it’s the whole world doing it,” Fiore said. Fiore has taught T’ai Chi for more than 20 years and said he began doing the art form to relax from the stress he felt from the 30 years he spent in real estate. Soon, it became his full-time job. “By doing T’ai Chi, it is meditation in art form. It promotes relaxation, lessens stress, boosts the immune system, and reduces joint pain,” Fiore said. “There are so many health bene fi ts.” At World T’ai Chi and Qigong Day, instructors from around the Valley will gather and showcase the different forms of each practice. There will be demonstrations with swords and fans, as well as crane dancing led by Tori Fiore. “I will be presenting at least two forms of T’ai Chi,” said Jake Zinn who has taught T’ai Chi in Arcadia since 2004. Zinn said he encourages those who have never heard of T’ai Chi to come out and experience the free event. There are many opportunities to learn, and connect with an instructor in any area, he said. “I hope they’ll learn how easy T’ai Chi is and really how good it feels to practice it,” he said. There also will be different tables set up at the event with acupuncture stations and Chinese medicines. At the end of the event, Tori Fiore will lead a meditation to promote healing and calming of the mind and body. “When we do T’ai Chi, you save a little bit of energy and at the end send it back into the world to hopefully create something positive,” Zinn said. “Many people are mistaken when they consider T’ai Chi martial arts. The message of T’ai Chi is self-defense from the harmful things in life.” The event begins at 9:30 a.m. and is open and free to the public. The Franciscan Renewal Center is at 5802 E. Page 31 April 2012 Healthy via ‘pond scum’ By Caroline Hester It’s easy to dedicate yourself to a business when you believe in the product, Annette Berk said. In the four years she and Paul Torok have lived in Arcadia, their focus has been developing and growing a green business selling a nutrient-rich product called spirulina, commonly known as “pond scum.” “I challenge people to try it,” Berk said. The health bene fi ts of spirulina are numerous, said the couple, and they started their business Green Tara LLC more than a year ago with several products incorporating the superfood in edible, organic snacks. “We are very much what we eat,” Torok said. “It’s important to take care of your body.” Spirulina is 100 percent natural, nutrient dense blue-green algae with high concentrations of iron, protein, antioxidants, amino acids, and B-12 vitamins. Green Tara’s spirulina is imported from a natural, sustainable family farm in Costa Rica that Torok discovered while living there. “Most spirulina is now manmade,” Torok said. “The spirulina we use is grown in the pure, clean water in Costa Rica and is never ground up into powder form.” The bene fi t of bypassing the powder- grinding process is that spirulina’s natural spiral shape stays intact and there are no additive chemicals or preservatives included in the process, he said. “This means a lot to our clients,” Torok said. Green Tara’s Spirulina Crunchies, Spirulina Tablets, and Spirulina Energy- bites are sold through the couple’s Green Tara website (www.greentara.biz) as well as such other online health store venues as Ecobold.com and Spencersmarket.com. “There are so many healthy options that the average household and parent didn’t know about fi ve years ago,” Berk said. Berk helps get the word out about their products through her “market-savvy” skills, Torok said. She operates the website and sends samples to potential clients as Torok runs the business and creative sides of Green Tara. “Paul’s very creative, he designed the labeling for Green Tara,” Berk said. The couple also has the help of their four children who regularly eat the product and enjoy taking part in the cooking process, they said. Berk and Torok operate Green Tara from an of fi ce they have on their Arcadia property and do much of the cooking and creation of the spirulina products on site. “We go out of our way to be more green and be good examples for our children,” Torok said. “They’re big advocates for us.” 602-526-1213 Anna@AnnaMcDowell.com www.AnnaMcDowell.com ABR, CRS, GRI Arcadia resident & parent proudly serving the neighborhood for 16 years.
